Alfredo E. Pascual Alfredo Pascual is the 20th President of the University of the Philippines. He assumed office in February 2011 for a six-year term. He is the first to have been appointed to the office under a new U.P. charter which was enacted in 2008 (U.P.'s centennial year) and which designated U.P. as the national university of the country. The University he now leads is a system consisting of seven constituent universities and an autonomous college spread over 15 campuses across the country. U.P. currently has over 50,000 students and close to 14,000 faculty and staff.

Prior to his appointment as U.P. President, Alfredo was the President of the U.P. Alumni Association and a member of the U.P. Board of Regents. He served as lead convener of the Automated Election System (AES) Watch--an independent, broad-based, and multi-sector coalition of citizen's groups and individuals that sought to monitor the preparation for and conduct of the country's first ever nationwide poll automation in May 2010.

For more than three decades, Alfredo made significant contributions to progress in the Asia-Pacific region as a finance professional and educator. He worked at the Asian Development Bank for 19 years until 2008, serving in such positions as Advisor for Public-Private Partnership, Director of Infrastructure Finance, and Director of Private Sector Operations. At ADB, he pursued pioneering projects and institution-building initiatives that contributed to the bank's efforts to respond to the emerging financing needs of the region and catalyze investments in the region's developing economies, particularly in the infrastructure and financial sectors.

Before becoming an international development banker, Alfredo spent nine years helping prepare managers for Asia as professor of finance at the Asian Institute of Management. He also undertook consulting assignments in Southeast Asia. In the 1970s, Alfredo was among the pioneers of investment banking in the Philippines, holding senior positions in Bancom Development Corporation, Philippine Pacific Capital (now RCBC Capital), and First Metro Investment Corporation.

Alfredo obtained his MBA and BS in Chemistry (cum laude) degrees from the University of the Philippines.
