This is another book relating the missionary activities in the Mountain Province, standing as a documental witness of a glorious victory won through the combined force of our united efforts in prayer and action. This is another abundant source of information to which you can always refer in order to bring home again the lofty ideals of "the little way" of St. Theresa of the Infant Jes us, which is nothing less than the one true Christian perfection. It was the famous French author Lamartine who wrote: "Le souvenir est l'ame de la vie". This special edition is the Annual Report of performed misionary work in the Mountain Province, of the Publication of The Little Apostle and El Misionero, and of Our Family Circle. A soldier who was present on the battle field and fought with us the good fight for souls, has a right to be informed about the obtained victories, and also to be warned of the necessity of improving our military tactics in order to assure still greater victories for the next campaign of 1939-1940. Philippine Islands THE Spanish missionaries accomplished a splendid apostolic work by leading, in relatively a short time (300 years), seven million Filipinos into the Fold of the Catholic Church, but they never succeeded in bringing · the Igorrote mountaineers to the true Faith. When in 1898 they were obliged by political circumstances to abandon their Philippine missions, there were altogether to be found about a hundred Christians in the Mountain Province. They had established several mis- · sion stations where a Dominican or an Augustinian Friar resided having his little chapel and school. That was only a beginning, of which nothing was left in the year 1907 when our Fathers came for the first time to the Philippines to take over the Mountain Province, because at that time almost ten years had passed since that mission field had been unwillingly abandoned. We do not exaggerate in the least when we say that in 1907 the Mountain Province was still a complete wilderness where traveling was not always safe. In the year 1900 when in company with two of my confreres I traveled through the Mountain Province, the American Provincial Governor did . not allow us to proceed from Bontok to Kiangan without a protecting guard of ten soldiers. Some days later an American supervisor of schools, Mr. Wood, passed with his caravan over the same mountain trail, but was treacherously attacked by men of the Ifugao tribe and arrived at Banaue his right arm stabbed by a lance. Even in 1911 in Bontok, where Rev. C. J urgens (now Most Rev. C. Jurgens, Bishop of Tuguegarao) resided already for four years, I was witness of the people of an Igorrote town rushing to the attack of another Igorrote town and hunting for human heads. The American Constabulary had a hard time to stop them and to drive them back to their own town. Yes, the headhunters were still in full sway, and it required the strong arm of an American force in order to make them desist from their sport of headhunting. Although the Igorrotes seemed to be tamed by force, nevertheless they kept in their hearts the savage ideal of merciless bloodshed. Only the true Faith could change their inner feelings, and that true Faith was brought to them by our missionaries. Nowadays we may say that headhunting belongs to the past, although the old Igorrote still carries tattooed on his face the insignias of his former heroism, and, while lonesome in his dusky shed he caresses his numerous trophies of human IV -Ut Omnes Unum Sint!s~ulls, he mourns the "golden the lessons of Catechism. There are actually 18 mission centers with residences of missionaries; they are: Baguio Trinidad, Kapangan, Itogon, B~ kod, Kabayan, Bauko, Kayan, Bontok, Sabangan, Barlig, Lubuagan, Naneng, Salegseg, Kabugao, Kiangan, Banaue and Burnay. All these central stations with their numerous annexes or barrios have a total Catholic population of 67,130 souls, have an Apostolic Prefect with 35 missionaries 24 churches, and 70 chapels. ' The missionary priests are very efficaciously helped by the Rev. Sisters Canonesses of St. Augustine, and in their schools and in their daily apostolic labor. Those Sisters have seven residences in the Mountain Province, where they have up-to-date schools, dormitories, and free dispensaries for the sick. Not only do they teach in the schools, but they go from town to town, from hut to hut to visit and nurse the sick, instructlng the old folk, baptizing little children ~n danger of death, and encouragmg the youth to assist at night at receive her or his passport to enter into the eternal abode of their heavenly Father. The Rev. Sisters of St. Paul de Chartres are conducting in Baguio a Catholic Hospital where numerous unhappy pagan lgorrotes are taken care of. These out casts of the world are first suspicious in discovering a hitherto unknown kindness and charity, but later, happy and bright with the precious gift of our holy Faith in their hearts, they go back to their poor shed endowed with a nobler outlook at the horizon of their future, -or, reborn through baptism into children of God, they find there the entrance gate to a better life, where all suffering ends. There are 21 Sisters and six Nurses in this Notre Dame de Lourdes Hospital.. II.~CHRISTIAN EDUCATION Schools( Primary and Intermediate) - - - High Schools - - - - Total attendance Sisters - - - - Lay teachers - - 35 5 5,322 63 101 Besides our own Catholic schools, our missionaries are allow-Ut Omnes Unum Sint!- v ' ed to enter the Public Schools to give a weekly religious instruction. But not only in churches and schools is the Gospel announced; our 79 Catechists have more than one hundred different gathering places where prayers and catechism are taught to the elder class of people and to the youth that do not attend any school. The Igorrotes are divided into several tribes, and with some of them exists the shabby custom of the "Atus" or general sleeping places for boys and girls respectively. These sleeping places constitute a great danger for the virtue of the children, and therefore we have our own 16 "Atus" or dormitories for boys and as many for girls where the children find a clean sleeping place under the supervision of a Sister or a Catechist. Orphan girls are the protegees of the Sisters, while orphan boys have a father in the priest, so that in our different residences 214 orphans are at home. III.-WORK OF CONVERSION AND CHRISTIAN LIFE Catechumens - - - - - - Baptized during past year Confessions during past 1,956 4,894 year - - - - - - - - 98,643 Communions during past year - - - - - - - - 384, 77 4 Marriages during past year 535 Deceased - - - - - - - - - 1,149 --JCEJCE-That is where we actually stand. Beside the conversion of the Igorrotes, there is the problem of the mines. I say, problem, because in reality it is a problem to be solved for the greater spiritual benefit of our Apostolic Prefecture. That the mining industry in the Mountain Province is going to exert great influence on our Igorrote population is obvious to any observer. Every mine in operation attracts thousands of Christian laborers from the lowlands and forms a large Catholic community to be taken care of. These new Christian agglomerations will decide the future of the Igorrotes in the Mountain Province. If these Christian laborers are taken care of so that they live up to the principles of their holy faith, the influence will be for the best and they will be the strongest means to chrh:tianize and civilize the Igorrotes. But, if on the contrary, these same immigrants in the Mountain Province form centers of should-be-Catholics, indifferent to their religion, then the influence will be for the worst and they will constitute the greatest obstacle for the conversion of the mountaineers. The missionaries in the Mountain Province are handling the situation to the best of their ability, but circumstances are not always favorable. Adveniat Regnum Tuum! VI -Ut Omnes Unum SintlNotes and Remarks on the Annual Report of the Missionary Work in the Mountain Province A FIRST reading of this annual report gives the impression of a great work done in a relatively short lapse of time, viz., 32 years, from 1907 to 1939. But mission-minded readers who have at heart the progress of Christianization of the Mountain Province, should also be made acquainted with the difficulties that were hampering a still greater progress, the reality of what is still to be done, and the today's lack of means which, may still handicap the zeal of the missionaries and, in the future, cause delay to the final accomplishment of. our desire, which is, the complete christianization of the Mountain Province. The existance of many dialects in the Mountain Province was certainly a great obstacle in the contact of our first missionaries with the Igorrote people; but, to overcome this difficulty, our pioneers of the past have been wonderful, and the fruits of their persevering researches and study have made it relatively easy for the new comers into this mission field. The disposition of the Igorrotes towards our missionaries has never been an obstacle in the work of. conversion. The wildness of some tribes was much more apparent than real, at least, in as far as their behavior is concerned in relation with the coming and work of our missionaries. Our missionaries have always been welcomed in any part of the Mountain Province; they have not been seriously molested in their missionary work and were never obliged to give up a mission on account of the ill-disposition of the mountaineers, but have ever been respected and loved even by those who do not yet accept our Christian religion. Pagan customs, especially the celebration of caniaos in which there is existent a specified sacrifice to the spirits or anitos, .has been and is still a serious obstacle to the conversion of the Igorrotes and other tribes in the Mountain Province, Ifugao, Kalinga and others. However, years of experience and study of these customs have resulted in a certain lawful compromise in which or by which the essentials of a idolatrous sacrifice are left out and replaced by a Christian blessing, and in this way the danger of relapse into idolatry for neophytes in the faith has been removed, and the conversion to the faith has been made easier for many pagans who are of good wilt The conduct of our missionaries in this important matter is justified by what the Apostles decided in Jerusalem on their con. duct to be followed in regard with converted Gentiles; they wrote to -Ut Omnes Unum Sint!- VII these converts: "That you abstain Jrom things sacrificed to idols ..... from which things keeping yourselves, you shall do well. Fare ye well." The great ignorance of the pagan adults is another handicap 'in the progress of conversion. To teach to old people the rudimental but fundamental truths of our boly faith is a task which may be -called at least very difficult, and in .some cases almost impossible. However, our missionaries do not -consider it impossible, because Cod's grace never fails where is the least little bit of good will. They never give up a soul, and their patience and endurance have, only with a few exceptions, always been crowned with final success, namely at the hour of death of :Such poor human creatures. The fact that Igorrotes are living scattered in the mountains -constitutes another great difficulty to their conversion. On the top -0f a hill, of a high mountain, or deep in a ravine, are groups of a few huts, and to visit these poor dwelling places a continual traveling up and down the mountains ~nd through swift rivers is needed. This is specially true in the sub-provinces of Benguet and Apayao; in other subprovinces there are greater agglomerations of little huts which may be called barrios. But everywhere the extreme poverty of the mountaineers adds .another hindrance to successful missionary work among them. During the day the people are far :away busy finding their daily food; they live from day to day from what they gather in their uma and other fields. Only little children and the too old people are left home. When a missionary arrives in a barrio he finds, most of the time, the place empty and the huts closed. It is only towards evening that men and women arrive, the first with a big load of firewood on their shoulder, the latter bent under the heavy weight of a basket filled with sweet potatoes, ahas, and leaves which serve as vegetable. Tired as they are they must first prepare the meager meal for their kindred and their pigs; only when all have satisfied their great hunger can the priest approach them for a talk on religion or invite them to a religious instruction. It is almost needless to say that the children are the hope of a mission. These little ones can be educated in the Christian religion, and, being the adults of tomorrow, they form later on Christian families wherein true Christian life has the upperhand and is well rooted. First Necessities in an lgorrote Mission They are: a school for children; a chapel for worship, and above all a teacher and a catechist to instruct the people in every barrio. To a missionary is in trusted the care of an extended district which is called his mission. Left alone he is unable to extend his missionary work to all his people. He needs help, the help of competent catechists and teachers. This help VIII -Ut Omnes Unum Sint !is an absolute necessity. Recalling to mind what has been explained above, every one who reads these comments will admit this absolute necessity. A catechist is in charge of one or two barrios, or of several groups of scattered huts, which is his appointed district. He takes his residence in the center of his district and from there he sets out to do missionary work of which the missionary is the director and supervisor. He knows the mode of living of the people committed to his care, and is present where circunstances make it possible for him to give instruction to the people. Sometimes he is in the fields, at another time he is teaching the little ones in the school, then again he is patiently occupied instructing old men and women who are no longer able to do the daily hard iabor in the fields, and }ate in the> evening you ·find him in the chapel or in his house giving religious instruction to the working adults, after which he rings the bell, calling young and old to the recitation in common of the holy rosary and the evening prayers. He knows every hut and their inmates, knows those that are sick and need his special care, and thanks to his vigilant zeal hundreds of little children and old people are baptized in "articulo mortis" and saved for eternity. The missionary regularly visits the district of a catechist, and then the catechumens found sufficiently instructed are baptized, those already Christians go to confession, assist at Mass and receive Holy Communion. The same is done in other districts appointed to other catechists, and the mission progresses, is on the way of becoming by and by a Christian community, which may rightly be called a Catholic parish. But a lamentable lack of means to support these helpful catechists makes it still impossible to do such salutary missionary work in too many districts of many missions in the Mountain Province. More Catechists are Urgently Needed This is the S.0.S. warning The Little Apostle and El Misionero are continually sending out to all mission-minded Catholics in the Philippines. The Little Apostle and El Misionero will never stop sending out this appeal for help as long as we are not sufficiently heard and responded by those in this Commonwealth who have at heart the spiritual welfare of their country, especially the Christianization of the Mountain Province. The urgent need for more catechists in the missions of the Mountain Province is a problem. It is a missionary-Catholic-national problem. It is the problem of every Filipino who enjoys the priceless gift of the Catholic Faith. It is up to the Catholics of this Commonwealth to solve this problem. And that for the simple reason of their being Catholics, and the Mountain Province a part of their country. -Ut Omnes Unum Sint!- IX We Repeat it Over Again! The best way to convert the Igorrotes and to make the Mountain Province a Christian province, is to provide them with a sufficient number of catechists. Give the Igorrotes a sufficient number of catechists who instruct them in our Holy Faith, and in a relatively short time they are all Christians. We have appealed for 90 more catechists, urgently needed in the Mountain Province. We are far from having received what we appealed for! We renew our appeal. What The Little Apostle and El Misionero have obtained until this date, is what follows; Two benefactors pay each P40.00 monthly. One pays P15.00 monthly. One pays P6.00 monthly. Five pay P5.00 monthly. Three pay P2.00 monthly. Ten pay P.1.00 monthly. Many occasionally send their contribution to the Catechists' Fund. The total of these contributions to the Catechists' Fund enables The Little Apostle and El Misionero to support eleven catechists in the Mountain Province. These catechists are in the following missions: One in Kiangan, Ifugao. One in Banaue, Ifugao. One in Burnay, Ifugao. One in Bontok, Bontok. One in Barlig, Bontok. Two in Kayan, Bontok. One in Salegseg, Kalinga. One in Kapangan, Benguet. One in Bokod, Benguet. One in Kabayan, Benguet. We are very grateful to these' generous benefactors, and with ·an our heart do we say to them: "God bless you abundantly for your charity towards the least of Our Lord's brethren." Missionaries-Priests, Sisters and Brothers-, catechists and Christians alike repay their benefactors with prayer, and prayer based on charity and gratitude goes straigth to the Heart of our Heavenly Father who does not want to be outdone in generosity by His children. But Much is Still to be Done! The Government has prescribed a Census to be made of the entire Philippine Commonwealth; once the results of this recent Census are published, we will know the population of the Mountain Province. However, we do not think it to be an exaggeration to say that in the Mountain Province there are still 250,000 pagans to be converted. And this great number of Igorrotes, still deprived of the gift of the true faith, are living scattered in the mountains. An average of 15 teachers and catechists are needed in every mission of the Mountain Province. This average is rather the minimum than the maximum. The Mountain Province has actually 18 missions, so that a simple multiplication shows that 270 teachers and catechists are x -Ut Omnes Unum Sint!needed. The Annual Report shows that these 18 missions have at present 101 teachers and 79 catechists, or a total of 180. The balance is 90, which is the number of catechists urgently needed in the Mountain Province. 180-11=169 Who, then, is supporting these 169 teachers and catechists? Who?-Listen, this is the fact which may well be known: The missionaries in the Mountain Province receive from General Missionary Organizations a little more than % of wh:at they need to support themselves; the remaining, about %. they receive from their respective Missionary Congregations. To support their missionary work, which consists in building churches, chapels, schools and convents, in running schools, in sending out catechists etc., they have nothing but their personal initiative and zeal in obtaining help from relatives and benefactors, and in depriving themselves of what is given to them for their own support. What the missionaries are able to do in the Mountain Province, in conditions which may rightly be called abnormal, borders on the miraculous. They have gone to the extreme of zeal and sacrifice. To draw conclusions from these notes and remarks on the annual report of the missionary work in the Apostolic Prefecture of the Mountain Province is left to our readers, to the Catholics of this Catholic country, the Philippine Commonwealth. These words were spoken on the XXXIII International Eucharistic Congress of Manila. -Ut Omnes Unum Sint!- XI THE PUBLICATION OF THE LITTLE APOSTLE AND EL MISIONERO The Little Apostle and El Misionero are published separately, in English and in Spanish Tespectively. Each one of these two m1ss1on magazines is the organ of the missionaries of the Immaculate Heart of Mary in the Mountain Province of the Philippines. In other words, it is the organ of the Scheut Fathers in the Apostolic Prefecture of the Mountain Province. The Little Apostle is published every first day of the month, except April and May. El Misionero is published every fifteenth day of the month, except April and May. On May first of every year our readers receive a special edition, marked 11 and 12, April and May, in English and in Spanish, which is the Annual Report 6f the missionary work in the Mountain Province, the publication of The Little Apostle and El Misionero, and of Our Family Circle. This special edition is to be added to the 10 editions of the school-year, which form a complete set of eleven editions, ready to be bound in book-form and to be placed in your library. YEARLY SUBSCRIPTION PRICE The yearly subscription price is Pl.00 for the Philippines, and $1.00 for the United States of America and foreign countries. Life subscription is PlS.00 for the Philippines, and $15.00 for the United States of America and foreign countries. The Little Apostle and El Misionero have a difficult problem to solve every year, namely the renewal of subscriptions. The publication of our two magazines is not a money making business, but a means to propagate the mission spirit in the Philippines. When one subscribes to The Little Apostle or to El Misionero, we consider him as one more acquired friend who has become deeply interested in the mission work in the Mountain Province. We treat him as a friend and benefactor whom we trust for the renewal of his yearly subscription. This explains why we take always the liberty of continuing a subscription in the belief that the subscriber wants it extended. When one's subscription is expired and the renewal of it is not made in due time, we send him a letter to inform him that if he continues receiving The Little Apostle or El Misionero, it is because we have taken for granted that he still wants to favor us with his cooperation in the great work of christianization of the Mountain XII -Ut Omnes Unum Sint!Province, and to keep his membership in Our Family Circle. But every year there are a number of subscribers who fail to renew their subscription or to answer our letter. This sad fact constitutes a serious handicap in keeping both ends meet in as far as the printing expenses are concerned. It wouldn't be very difficult to make The Little Apostle and El Misionero selfsupporting if we had not to confront with the lamentable negligence of a number of subscribers. I wonder if they realize that they are handicapping a great work of charity instead of helping it. OTHER DIFFICULTIES IN KEEPING OUR MAGAZINF..S SELFSUPPORTING However there are still other difficulties which hamper our endeavors to make our mission magazines selfsupporting. The first is the fact that the work of setting types is doubled, and it is exactly this kind of printing work which is the most expensive. Then comes the necessity of keeping the yearly subscription price of Pl.00, in spite of the fact that we are obliged to follow the progress of time in presenting The Little Apostle and El Misionero to our readers. Readers of today want good paper and plenty of illustrations, which make our publication expenses twice as much as three years ago. Finally, we are more and more deprived of the great help of advertisers. This is due to a persistent crisis in business. In former days advertisements easily covered the balance of a yearly deficit and extra expenses; today, if you deduct the fees for collection and the expenses for printing the ads, they have become of very little help. HOW ARE OUR MISSION MAGAZINES EXISTING TODAY? We have a total of 4,300 subscribers. Many of our subscribers are students of colleges and Catholicschools. These students are our best subscribers, because they never fail in renewing their subscription. Allow me an interruption to express here my heartiest thanks to these Catholic Institutions. Such subscribers are themore welcome because students carry their magazine into their homes and multiply our readers. We have about 700 life subscribers, the capital of which produces an income providing for their annual subscription fees. The amount received for new and renewed annual subscriptions~ To all this is to be added the little help we get from advertisements. The total of receipts forthcoming from all these mentioned sources is not enough to cover the expenses of publication. SERE generoso-pondre por OBRA mi reso-luci6n! - Ut Omnes Unum Sint !- XIX Estado Actual de la Prefectura Apostolica De la Provincia Montaflosa, Filipinas Los misioneros espafioles realizaron una esplendida labor apost6lica al conducir en un tiempo relativamente corto (300 afios), a siete millones de filipinos al redil de la Iglesia Cat6lica, pero nunca lograron llevar a los igorrotes de las montafias a la verdadera fe. Cuando en 1898 se vieron obligados por las circunstancias politicas a abandonar sus misiones filipinas, en total se hallarian en la Provincia Montafiosa unos cien cristianos. Habian establecido varios puestos de misi6n donde un religioso dominico o agustino residia con su capillita y la escuela. Eso era solamente el comienzo, del que nada quedaba cuando en 1907 nuestros Padres llegaron por primera vez a Filipinas para encargarse de la Provincia Montafiosa, porque entonces casi habian pasado diez aiios desde que aquel campo misional qued6 involuntariamente abandonado. No exageramos en lo mas minima al decir que en 1907 la Provincia Montaiiosa era todavia una selva completa donde el viajar no siempre era seguro. En 1909, cuando en compaiiia de dos de mis hermanos viaje por la Provincia Montaiiosa, el gobernador provincial norteamericano no nos permiti6 que siguieramos nuestro camino desde Bontok a Kiangan sin una protectora escolta de diez soldados. U nos dias despues un norteamericano, inspector de escuelas, Mr. Wood, paso con su comitiva por el mismo camino de la montataiia, pero fue traidoramente atacado por individuos de la tribu ifugao y lleg6 a Banaue con el brazo derecho atravesado por una lanza. Aun en 1911 en Bontok, donde el R.P.C. Jurgens (hoy Exmo. Mons. C.Jurgens,Obispo de Tuguegarao) ya habia estado residiendo durante cuatro aiios, fui testigo de c6mo gente igorrote del pueblo realizaba una incursion contra otro pueblo igorrote para cortar cabezas humanas. La Constabularia norteamericana paso trabajo en detenerlos y hacer que volvieran a su propio pueblo. Si, los cortacabezas todavia estaban en completa actividad, y fue necesario el brazo fuerte de unos soldados norteamericanos para hacerlos desistir de su ansiado deporte de cazar cabezas. Aunque . los igorrotes parecieron quedar amansados por la fuerza. sin embargo; conservaron en sus corazones el salvaje ideal de cruel derramamiento de sangre. Solo la verdadera Fe podia cambiar sus intimos sentimientos, y esa verdadera fe les llevaron nuestros misioneros. En nuestros dias podemos decir que la caza de cabezas ya es cosa del pasado, aunque el viejo igorrote todavia lleva tatuadas en en su rostro las insignias de su anterior heroismo, y que, mientras solitario en su obscura vivienda xx -Ut Omnes Unum Sint!acaricia sus muchos trofeos de craneos humanos,lamenta la "edad de otro de antes" que ya se ha ido para siempre ...... --~+-<!Cuales son los frutos al cabo de 30 aiios de labor misionera? Leed nuestro reciente informe y juzgad por vosotros mismos. lnforme Anual de la Prefectura Apostolica de la Provincia Montaiiosa, F. (Desde el 1.o de julio de 1937 al 30 de junio de 1938) I. PROPAGACION DE LA FE. Actualmente hay 18 centros de mision con residencias para los misioneros; son los de: Baguio, Trinidad, Kapangan, ltogon, Bokod, Kabayan, Bauko, Kayan, Bontok, Sabangan, Barlig, Lubuagan, Naneng, Salegseg, Kabugao, Kiangan, Banaue y Burnay. Todas estas estaciones centrales con sus muchos anexos o barrios tienen una poblacion catolica total de 67, 130 almas, un Prefecto A postolico con 35 misioneros, 24 iglesias y 70 capillas. Los sacerdotes misioneros reciben la eficaz ayuda ·de las Reverendas Madres Canonesas de San Agustin, con sus escuelas y sus diarios trabajos de apostolado. Estas Religiosas tienen siete residencias en la Provincia Montaiiosa, donde sostienen y dirigen modernas escuelas, dormitorios y dispensarios gratuitos para los enfermos. No solo enseiian en las escuelas sino que ademas van de un pueblo a otro, de vivienda en vivienda para visitar y atender a los enfermos, instruir a los adultos, bautizar a los pequeiios que estan en peligro de morir, y alentar a los jovenes a que asistan por la noche a las lecciones de Catecismo que se dan. Ya son centenares las almas inocentes de niiios que han volado al cielo por SUS abnegados esfuerzos, y muchos los ancianos que estan disfrutando de la f elicidad eterna gracias a una amable y paciente Sor Ines o Sor Fulana de Tal que dice sencillamente alsacerdote que esa "baket" (anciana) Saya, o "lakay" (anciano) Kibong desea recibir su pasaporte para entrar en la mansion eterna de su Padre celestial. Las Rev. Madres de St. Paul de Chartres tienen en Baguio un Hospital Catolico donde muchos infelices igorrotes paganos son atendidos. Estos desechados del mundo al principio muestran suspicacia al descubrir una bondad y caridad hasta entonces desconocidas para ellos, pero luego, of elices y animados con el precioso don de nuestra Santa Fe en sus corazones, vuelven a su pobre choza enriquecidos con una vision mas noble en el horizonte de su futuro; o, renacidos por el bautismo como hijos de Dios, encuentran alli su puerta de ingreso a una vida mejor donde terminan todos los padecimientos. XXII -Ut Omnes Unum Sint!NotaS y Observaciones Sohre el Inf orme Anual de la Obra Misional en la Provincia Montaiiosa L A primera lectura de este informe anual produce la impresion de una gran obra hecha en lapso de tiempo relativamente corto, o sea, 32 aiios, desde 1907 hasta 1939. Pero los lectores de espiritu misionero que se interesan vivamente por el progreso de la cristianizacion de la Provincia Montaiiosa, deben conocer tambien las dificultades que han estado obstaculizando un mayor adelanto, la realidad de lo que aun queda por hacer, y la falta de medias que hay ahora y que pueden aun estorbar el celo de los misioneros y, en lo futuro, retardar la final realizacion de nuestro deseo, que es la completa cristianizacion de la Provincia Montaiiosa. La existencia de muchos dialectos en la Provincia Montaiiosa fue ciertamente un gran obstaculo para la comunicaci6n de nuestros primeros misioneros con los igorrotes; pero, para veneer esta dificultad, nuestros precursores realizaron una obra admirable, y el fruto de sus perseverantes investigaciones y estudios han facilitado relativamente el camino de los recien llegados a este cam po misional. La disposici6n de los igorrotes hacia nuestros misioneros no ha sido nunca un obstaculo en la obra de conversion. La ferocidad de algunas tribus era mas aparente que real, por lo menos, en cuanto a su conducta en relacion con la venida y la labor de nuestros misioneros. Nuestros misioneros han sido siempre bien recibidos en cualquier punto de la Provincia Montaiiosa; no han sido gravemente molestados en su obra misional ni jamas se han vista obligados a abandonar una mision por mala disposicion de los montaiieses, sino que siempre han sido respetados y amados inclusive por aquellos que no han aceptado todavia nuestra religion cristiana. Las costumbres paganas, especialmente la celebracion de caniaos en los que hay un sacrificio determinado a los espiritus o anitos, han sido y siguen siendo un grave obstaculo en la conversion de los igorrotes y otras tribus de la Provincia Montafiosa, Ifugao, Kalinga y otras mas. Sin embargo, los afios de experiencia y estudio de estas costumbres han dado por resultado cierta transaccion legitima en la cual o por la cual los elementos esenciales de un sacrificio idolatrico se han descartado y han sido sustituido.s por una adoracion cristiana, y de esta manera se han evitado el peligro de que los neofitos renieguen de la fe volviendo a la idolatria, y se ha hecho mas facil la conversion para muchos paganos que son de buena voluntad. La conducta de nuestros misioneros en este importante asunto se justifica por lo que los Ap6stoles - Ut Omnes Unum Sint!- XXIII decidieron en Jerusalen sobre la conducta que habrian de observar con los gentiles conversos, a quienes escribieron estas palabras: "Que os abstengais de manjares inmolados a los idolos .... de las cuales cosas hareis bien en guardaros. Dios os guarde." La gran ignorancia de los paganos adultos es otra desventaja en el progreso de la conversion. Enseiiar a los ya maduros las verdades elementales pero fundamentales de nuestra santa fees una labor que puede por lo menos calificarse de muy dificil, y en algunas casos casi imposible. Sin embargo, nuestros misioneros no lo consideran imposible, porque la gracia de Dios no falta nunca alla donde hay siquiera un apice de buena voluntad. Jamas abandonan un alma, y su paciencia y constancia siempre, con pocas excepciones, ha sido coronada con el triunfo final, es decir, en la hora de la muerte de tales infelices criaturas humanas. El hecho de que los igorrotes vivan esparcidos por las montaiias constituye otro obstaculo grande en su conversion. En la cima de una colina o de una elevada montaiia, o alla en el fondo de un precipicio, hay grupos de unas cuantas chozas, y para visitar estas pobres viviendas resulta necesario un continuo viajar fatigoso, subiendo y bajando montes y cruzando rios de veloz corriente. Esto ocurre especialmente en las subprovincias de Benguet y Apayao; en otras subprovincias hay mayores aglomeraciones de casitas que podrian llamarse barrios. Pero en todas partes la pobreza extrema de los montaiieses afiade otra dificultad en la obra eficaz misionera entre ellos. Durante el dia la gente se halla bastante lejos en busca de su diario sustento; viven un dia tras oti:o de lo que consiguen recoger en sus uma y otros campos. Solamente los pequeiios y los ya muy entrados en edad se quedan en sus casas. Cuando llega un misionero a un barrio encuentra, la mayor parte de las veces, desierto el lugar y cerradas las casas. Solo hacia el atardecer es cuando van llegando hombres y mujeres, aquellos con una gran carga de leiia sobre los hombros, estas inclinadas bajo el peso de un cesto Ueno de camotes, ahas y hojas que sirven de legumbre. No obstante estar cansados, tienen que preparar su frugal comida para ellos y SUS cerdos; solo cuando ya todos ban satisf echo su gran apetito puede el sacerdote acercarse a ellos para una charla sobre religion o para invitarles a una instruccion religiosa. Es casi innecesario decir que los niiios son la esperanza de una mis10n. Estos pequeiios pueden ser educados en la religion cristiana y, siendo los adultos de maiiana, formaran mas tarde familias cristianas en las cuales domine y este bien arraigada la verdadera vida cristiana. De esta pormenorizada descripci6n del estado de la Provincia Montaiiosa puede facilmente deducirse cuales son las Prim.eras Necesidades de una Mision lgorrote Son: una escuela para niiios, una XXIV -Ut Omnes Unum Sint!capilla para el culto y, sabre todo, un maestro y un catequista para que instruyan a la gente de cada barrio. Aun misionero se le encomienda el cuidado de extensos distritos que se Haman su misi6n. Dejado solo no puede extender su labor misionera a todos los confiados a su celo. Necesita ayuda, el auxilio de competentes catequistas y maestros. Esto es de absoluta necesidad. Recordando lo que anteriormente se ha explicado, todo aquel que lea estos comentarios admitini esta absoluta necesidad. Un catequista esta encargado de uno o dos barrios, o de varios grupos de desperdigadas viviendas, que son su distrito seiialado. Establece su residencia en el centro de su distrito y desde alli emprende su labor misional de la que el misionero es el director e inspector. El sabe el modo de vivir de la gente puesta bajo su cuidado, y esta alla donde las circunstancias hacen que le sea posible dar instrucci6n al pueblo. Algunas veces esta en los campos, otras esta enseiiando a los pequeii.os en la escuela, luego esta asimismo ocupado en la instrucci6n de los viejos que ya no pueden hacer el rudo trabajo diario del campo, y ya de noche se le encontrara en la capilla o en su casa enseiiando a los adultos que han estado trabajando, despues de lo cual toca la campana para convocar a todos, grandes y pequeiios, a la recitaci6n en comun del santo rosario y las oraciones de la noche. Conoce cada vivienda y sus moradores, sabe quienes estan enfermos y necesitan su especial cuidado, y gracias a su_vigilante celo centenares de niiios y ancianos son bautizados in articulo mortis y salvados para la eternidad. Regularmente el misionero visita el distrito del catequista, y entonces los catecumenos a quienes se les encuentre bastante instruidos son bautizados, los ya cristianos se confiesan, vnn a misa y reciben la Sagrada Comuni6n. Lo mismo se hace en otros distritos confiados a otros catequistas, y la misi6n progresa, esta en camino de ser poco a poco una comunidad cristiana que puede llamarse justamente una parroquia cat6lica. Pero una lamentable falta de medios para mantener aestosutiles catequistas hace que todavia sea imposible realizar tal saludable labor misionera en muchos distritos de muchas misiones de la Provincia Montaiiosa. Se Necesitan Urgentemente Mas Catequistas Esta es la seiial de petici6n de auxilio que constantemente estan enviando El Misionero y The Little Apostle a todos los cat6licos de Filipinas que estan interesados en las misiones. El Misionero y The Little Apostle no cesaran nunca de hacer este llamamiento de socorro mientras no seamos suficientemente oidos y atendidos por quienes en estas Mancomunidad estiman cordialmente el bienestar espiritual de su pais, en especial la cristianizaci6n de la Provincia Montaiiosa. La urgente necesidad de mas catequistas en las misiones de la Provincia Montaiiosa es un pro-Ut Omnes Unum Sint!- xxv blema. Es un problema misional, cat6lico y nacional. Es problema de todo filipino que goce del inapreciable don de la fe cat6lica. Corresponde a los cat6licos de esta Mancomunidad el resolverlo. Y esto por la sencilla raz6n de ser cat6licos y constituir la Provincia Montafiosa una parte de su patria. i Lo Repetimos Otta V ez ! El mejor medio de convertir a los igorrotes y hacer ptovincia cristiana la Montafiosa, es dotandole de un numero bastante de catequistas. Dad a los igorrotes un numero suficiente de catequistas que les ensefien nuestra Santa Fe, y en un tiempo relativamente corto seran todos cristianos. Hemos hecho -un llamamiento para tener 90 catequistas mas, que se necesitan urgentemente en la Provincia Montafiosa. No podemos decir que hemos recibido lo solicitado. Renovamos nuestro llamamiento. Lo que han obtenido hasta la fecha El Misionero y The Little Apostle es lo siguiente: Dos bienhechores pagan al contado P40.00 mensuales. Uno paga PlS.00 al mes. Uno paga P6.00 al mes. Cinco dan PS.00 mensualmente. Tres donan P2.00 al mes. Diez pagan Pl.00 mensual. Muchos dan de vez en cuando sus donaciones para el Fondo de Catequistas. El total de estas contribuciones al Fondo de Catequistas permite a El Misionero y The Littie Apostle mantener a once catequistas en la Provincia Montafiosa. Estos estan en las siguientes misiones: Uno en Kiangan, Ifugao. Uno en Banaue, Ifugao. Uno en Burnay, Ifugao. Uno en Bontoc, Bontoc. Uno en Barlig, Bontoc. Dos en Kayan, Bontoc. Uno en Salegseg, Kalinga. Uno en Kapangan, Benguet. Uno en Bokod, Benguet. Uno en Kabayan, Benguet. Estamos agradecidos a estos generosos bienhechores, y con todo el coraz6n les decimos: "Dios os hendiga abundantemente por vuestra caridad con los mas pequefios de nuestros hermanos en el Senor." Los Misioneros-sacerdotes, religiosas y hermanos, lo mismo que los catequistas y cristianos recompensan a sus bienhechores con la oraci6n, y la oraci6n fundada en la caridad y la gratitud va directamente al Corazon de Nuestro Padre Celestial que no quiere ser superadoen generosidad porsus hijos. jPero aun Queda Mucho por Hacer! El Gobierno ha dispuesto que se tome el censo de toda la Mancomunidad; cuando el resultado del mismo se de a conocer, sabremos que poblaci6n tiene la Provincia Montafiosa. Sin embargo, no creemos que sea una exageraci6n decir que en la Provincia Montafiosa hay todavia 250,000 paganos por convertir. y este gran numero de igorrotes, privados del don de la verdadera XXVI -Ut Om11es Unum Sint!f e, viven esparcidos por las montaii.as. Un promedio de 15 maestros y catequistas se necesitan en cada misi6n de la Provincia Montaii.osa. Este promedio es mas bien el minimo que el maximo. La Provincia Montaii.osa tiene actualmente 18 misiones, de manera que una sencilla multiplicaci6n demuestra que se necesitan 270 maestros y catequistas. El lnforme Anual da a conocer que estas 18 misiones tienen ahora 101 maestros y 79 catequistas, o un total de 180. Faltan pues, 90, que es el numero de catequistas que se necesitan urgentemente en la Provincia Montaii.osa. 180 -11=169 ~Quienes, pues, son los que mantienen a estos 169 maestros y catequistas? ~Quien? -Escuchad, esta es la realidad que bien merece ser conocida: Los misioneros de la Provincia Montaii.osa reciben de las Sociedades Misionales Generales un poco mas de VJ de lo que necesitan para mantenerse; el resto, unos %, lo reciben de sus respectivas Congregaciones Misioneras. Para sostener su labor misionera, que consiste en la edificaci6n de iglesias, capillas, escuelas y conventos, mantenimiento de las escuelas, envio de catequistas, etc., no tienen mas que su celo e iniciativa personales para conseguir la ayuda de sus parientes y bienhechores, y la privaci6n de aquello que se les da para su propio sustento. Lo que los misioneros logran realizar en la Provincia Montaii.osa, en condiciones que pueden justamente llamarse anormales, linda con lo milagroso. Han llegado al extremo del celo y el sacrificio. Las conclusiones de estas notas y observaciones acerca del informe anual de la obra misional de la Pref ectura Apost6lica de la Provincia Montaii.osa dejamos que las deduzcan nuestros lectores, los cat6licos de este pais cat6lico, la Mancomunidad Filipina. Estas palabras se pronunciaron en el XXXIII Congreso Eucaristico Internacional de Manila. -Vt Omnes Unum Sint!- XXVII La Publacion de El Misionero y The Little Apostle El Misionero y The Little Apostle se publican separadamente, en espaiiol y en ingles respectivamente. Cada una de estas dos revistas misionales es el 6rgano de los Misioneros del Inmaculado Corazon de Maria de la Provincia Montaiiosa de Filipinas. En otras palabras, es el 6rgano de los Padres de Scheut de la Prefectura Apost6li.ca de la Provincia Montaiiosa. The Little Apostle se publica el dia primero de cada mes, excepto los meses de abril y mayo. El Misionero a su vez sale el dia 15 de cada mes, con excepci6n igualmente de los meses de abril ymayo. El primero de mayo de cada aiio nuestros 1ectores reciben una edici6n especial que lleva los numeros 11 y 12, abril y mayo, en los dos idiomas, ingles y castellano, y que es el Informe Anual de la obra misional de la Provincia Montaiiosa, de la publaci6n de The Little Apostle y El Misionero, y de Nuestra Junta Familiar. Esta edici6n especial se debe unir a las diez del aiio academico y formar asi una colecci6n completa de once ediciones, listas para ser encuadernadas y colocar el volumen en vuestra biblioteca. PRECIO DE LA SUSCRIPCION ANUAL La suscripci6n anual cuesta Pl.00 en Filipinas, y $1.00 en los Estados _U nidos de America y los paises extranjeros. La suscripci6n vitalicia es de '.Pl5.00 en Filipinas, y $15.00 en los Estados Unidos de America y naciones extranjeras. El Misionero y The Little Apostle tienen un dificil problema que resolver cada aiio, y es el de la re~ novaci6n de las suscripciones . La publicaci6n de nuestras dos revistas misionales no es una empresa lucrativa, sino un media de propagar el espiritu misionero en Filipinas. Cuando uno se suscribe a El Misionero o The Little Apostle, lo consideramos un amigo mas ganado queseinteresahondamenteen la obra misional de la Provincia Montaiiosa. Lo tratamos coma un amigo y bienhechor de quien esperamos que renovara SU SUScripci6n anual. Y esta es la raz6n de por que nos tomamos la libertad de seguir manteniendo una suscripci6n en la creencia de que el interesado desea renovarla. Cuando expira una suscripci6n y su renovaci6n no se hace a su debido tiempo, enviamos al suscritor una carta en la cual le notificamos que si continua recibiendo El Misionero o The Little Apostle, es porque suponemos que desea todavia favorecernos con su cooperaci6n en la gran empresa de la cristianizaci6n de la Provincia Montaiiosa y conservar su calidad XX VIII -Ut Omnes Unum Sint!de miembro de Nuestra Junta Familiar. Pero todos los aiios hay cierto nfunero de suscritores que dejan de renovar sus suscripciones o contestar a nuestra carta. Este triste hecho constituye un grave obstaculo en conseguir que hasten los recursos en lo que toca a los gastos de impresi6n. No seria dificil hacer de El Misionero y TheLittleApostle revistas que por si mismas se sostengan si no fuera por la negligencia de cierto mimero de suscritores. No se si se dan cuenta de que obstaculizan una gran labor de caridad en vez de ayudarla. OTRAS DIFICULTADES EN EL PROPIO SOSTENIMIENTO DE NUESTRAS REVISTAS Sin embargo, hay todavia otras dificultades que entorpecen nuestros esfuerzos por hacer que las dos revistas se sostengan por si m1smas. La primera es que el trabajo de composici6n se duplica, y, precisamente, esta clase de trabajo de imprenta es la mas costosa. Luego viene la necesidad de mantener en Pl.00 la suscripci6n anual, no obstante vernos obligados a seguir los progresos del tiempo en cuanto a la presentaci6n de El Misionero y The Little Apostle. Los lectores de hoy quieren buen papel y muchas ilustraciones, lo cual hace que los gastos de nuestra publicaci6n sean el doble de hace tres anos. Finalmente, nos vemos mas y mas privados de la gran ayuda de los anunciantes. Esto proviene de una depresi6n persistente en los negocios. Anteriormente los anuncios cubrian facilmente la partida del deficit anual y los gastos extraordinarios; ahora, descontando la comisi6n de cobranza y los gastos de impresi6n de los anuncios, estos resultan una muy reducida ayuda. i!COMO VIVEN AHORA NUESTROS REVISTAS MISIONALES? Tenemos un total de 4,300 sus· critores. Muchos de nuestros suscritores son alumnos de las Escuelas y Co· legios Cat6licos. Estos alumnos son nuestros mejores suscritores, porque jamas dejan de renovar sus suscripciones. Permitidme que haga un parentesis con el fin de expresar mi cordial gratitud a estas Instituciones Cat6licas. Ta· les suscritores son los mas estimados porque los alumnos se llevan la revistas a sus casas y de ese modo multiplican el numero de nuestros lectores. Tenemos 700 suscripciones vitalicias, cuyo capital produce un ingreso que cubre su correspondiente suscripci6n anual. La cantidad que se recibe por las suscripciones nuevas y ren~ vadas. A todo esto se suma lo poco que conseguimos de los anuncios.
