CENTENER.'l Si bien se ahorró los saetazos directcs e inmediatos de innumernbles sobresaltos y horrores sin cuento del trienio de la vandálica e inhumana ocupación japonesa, la señorita Chito Madrigal no pudo menos de experimentar en lo más íntimo de su ser, aunque a millar.:s de millas de su país natal, las mortificantes ansiedades y el profundo sufrimiento moral que prcdujeron en su vida joven y lozana, ineluctablemente, tres largos años de plena consciencia de que el pueblo filipino, su pueblo, era víctima de una crueldad y vejación sin precedentes en manos de las sádicas hordas de Hirohito y de Tojo ... -Y o estaba estudiando entonces en el Rosemont College- ncs dice en el deshilvanar de una breve entrevista que tuvo lugar en una galería llena de tonos azules, acafetados y amarillos, junto a una espaciosa azotea casi toda roja, diríase escondida bajo los frondosos copos muy verdes de sendos árboles de santo! que se yerguen sobre la fresca y ensoñadora era. Y prosigue: -Así y todo, a pesar de estar tan lejos de Filipinas, no es para c.:;ntada la ansiedad 'lUe experimenté pensando en la barba1ie japonesa de la que creí, durante días, meses y años, que no podrían menos ele ser también víctimas los seres queridos que tenía en Manila. Día tras día devoraba. con irreprensible tristeza, los relatos periodísticos sobre la guerra en Filipinas, poseída de un martirizante temor siempre de que a través de las noticias que a nosotros llegaban pudiera enterarme de dolorosos detalles que afectasen directamente a mi padre y a mis hermanos ... Pero nada se decía· de ellos, y ésto, con el tiempo fué acallando y aquietando, hasta cierto punto Srfo. Chito ,lfadrigal tranquilizador, mi terrible y diaria preocupación. -¿Cuánto tiempo estuvo usted en América ?-preguntamos. -Pues. mire, yo salí de Manila a los catorce años y me quedé en Estactes Unidos, principalmente en Filadelfia y Nueva York, ocho años. Allá estaba, como he dicho, cuando estalló la guerra del Pacífico. Llegué de reg1·eso a Manila el mes de julio de 1946, casi en la víspera de proclamarse la independencia de nuestro país. En Rosemont College obtuve mi Bachillerato en Artes tomé cursos avanzados de arpa bajo profesores renombrados ... P16.00 FELIZ INICIATIVA A I"aíz del re¡:>:reso del Dr. Bantug, quien, como saben les lectores de SEMANA por la entrevista de su colal]oraclor Renán de Zojés, ha estado en España durante más ele un año, nó para recrearse frívolamente smo lJara I"e<!lizar importantes trabajos de investigación ca las hiljliotec~;s ~· archivos de aquel país, que le han hecho acreador a honrosas distinciones; se ha expresado la idea de agrupar en una sociedad a los filipinos que han res;dido más o menos tiempo en la antigua ~1etrópoli ele estas Islas. El objeto de la propuesta sociedad sería mantener vivo en el ánimo de sus miembros los sentimientos de admiración y afecto a España, es decir, a su cultura, y, para ello, procurarían continuar las relaciones iniciadas con los intelectuales españoles, y, por este medio, cultivar también los diversos aspectos de la cultura hispana: el literario, el artístic:J y el científico: Jo cual quiere decir que habría conferencias y lecturas sobre temas de la respectiva especialidad de cadR miembro. Y se ha hecho notar, recalcándolo, que la formación de esta sociedad en nada amenguaría el filipinismo de quienes la integren. Parecería superflua esta rescrYa, pero, bien pensada. no deja de ser conveniente a fin de e\·itar enóneas conclusiones por parte de quienes adcleticren ele prejuic~o o de mala voluntad. No hay el menor riesgo, ciertamente, de que el fomento del hispanismo y la hispanofilia entre los filipin:~s produ7.~a una disminución siquiera del legítimo y natural amor a Filipinas que deben sentir, y sienten en efecto. todos los buenos hijos de estas hermosas [4] El Excmo. Mons. Gabriel M. Reyes, Arzobispo de Cebú, que ha sido nombrado por la Santa Sede Arzobispo Coadjutor de Manila, con derecho de sucesión, y Administrador Apostólico sede plena, con todas las facultades de un obispo residente. Su nombramiento ha sido acogido con geneml beneplácito por todos los católicos de Filipinas. Islas. En el corazón filipino pueden coexistir los dos afectos, lo mismo que existen en el corazón español. No son amores que se repelen; podría decirse que, en cierto modo y en ciertos casos, inclusive se complementan, _teniendo en cuenta el larg-0 período en que la historia de ambos pueblos ha estado discurriendo por el mismo cauce. Es, por lo tanto, una feliz idea la propuesta creación de una sociedad formada por los filipinos que han estado en España por algún tiempo, particularmente los que allí estuvieron con el fin de aumentar el caudal de sus conocimientos literarios, históricos, artísticos o científicos, bebiéndolos en las instituciones antiguas y modernas de la nación que en un tiempo fue nuestra mentora. Hacernos, pues, votos por que el iniciador o los iniciadores de esta luminosa idea, se animen a darle pronto realidad, para que produzca los benef kiosos resultados que se anhelan : el primero de los cuales sería un mayor estrechamiento de la amistad hispanofilipina. Creemos que como todos los artistas, la Srta. Madrigal, en su gran afición a la música debería tener piezas de su predilección y le hacemos una pregunta en tal sentido. -Claire de L11ne me gusta sobremanera. Gozo ejecutándola. Song of India también me encanta y esta pieza fué la que toqué en el primer concierto en que tomé parte desp.ués ele mi vuelta a Manila. Y luego dice: -Juego mucho al golf y tampoco descuido el tenn is porque lo considero un magnífico ejercicio de agilidad y destreza. Y volwmos a los viajes. Es, por lo vist::, muy marcada entre las señoritas de la alta esfera social la afición que hace a trotatierras y algo nos intuye que esa afición también se puede encontrar, en un grado apreciable, en nuestra entreYistada. Inquirimos y ella rEsponde: -Desde luego. El año pasado hice un viaje de recorrido por Europa. Fuí primeramente a España, varias de cuyas provincias visité después de Madrid, especialmente las del litoral meridional. De España pasé a Francia y de alli a Italia y a otros paises europeos. París me impresionó sobremanera. Aquella ciudad tiene un encanto que no he encentrado en otras, si bien Madrid me gustó también extraordinariamente. -¿,Piensa usted hacer algún otro viaje por el extranjero? --'-Me gustaría, ¡como no! Nos despedimcs, pues, teniendo que lamentar íntimamente que la interviú no pudiese ser más extensa. [6] L por LILY TOTH de PATERNO Entre las organizaciones dedicadas a la promoción de la cultura existente en la actualidad en Manila, merece mención especial la Sociedad recientemente organizada bajo el nomb!·e de ":Manila Community Players", por el inusitado interés que ha despertado, desde los comienzos de su fundación, no sólo en las altas esferas de la "inteligencia" del país, sino también en la masa ávida de elevar su nivel intelectual. Esta Scciedad fue creada con el relevante fin de ofrecer al público manilense, espectáculos teatrales en ingWs, castellano y tagalo, de autores filipinos y extranjeros: obras de elevado carácter moral y educativo, para su solaz y entretenimiento. Su propósito ulterior, sin embargo, es labrar los cimientos par la fundación de un Teatro Nacional, y por ende, de una Escuela de Arte Escénico, que al igual que la "Comédie Francaise'' de París, estarán legítimamente integrados por elementos nativos: quienes formarán a su vez, con el estudio y a su debido tiempo, una .-.:·to. í,is,futtr· ;lf;'/ier "[,a drmcella" /)frccfo;·u, Srn. L>1círt Rifkiil "La Actriz" pléyade de artistas filipinos, qll<' lleguen a descollar en el escenario nacional, para. poder compararse favorablemente con los del extranjero, constituyendo un m::tivo d2 orgullo y un palp:ible exponente del grado superior de cultura ad· quirido por nue,;tra jown República. Esta Soc'edacl no se ha establecido con fines caritativos ni benéficcs, ya que a dichos fines existen numerosas instituciones y sociedades benémeritas en Manila: fundóse más bien con el exclusivo propósito rle crear tan pronto como lo permitan las cfrcunstancias, [ 7 ] una Escuela ~- un Teatro nacionales. Como se carece actualmente del número adecuado ele profesores capacitados, esta entidad se ha propuesto emia;· a estucliantes pensionados a :\ cr1.eamérica o Europa, para iniciarles en el difícil arte escénico: allá irán también los futuros decoradores, diseñadores, expertos en vestuario, maquillaje, etc. etc. El teatro d2sempeña un papel muy importante en la Yicla de todos los pueblos civilizados, y marca as'mismo un índice seguro de cultma social. Los actores y actri(Pasu o lu pág. 10) Efemérides Filipinas LOS PRIMEROS EN DAR LA VUELTA AL GLOBO Septiembre 9, 1522 "El día 9 de septiembre del año 1522 iban por las· calles de Sevilla dieciocho hombres en dirección a la iglesia de Nuestra Señora de la Victoria; su traje harapiento, sus pies descalzos y la vela encendida que cada uno llevaba en la mano, daban a conocer que se trataba de una promesa o voto que cumplían. -Oyeron .devotamente una misa en la iglesia mencionada, y después SP. dirigieron con igual objeto a Nuestra Señora de la Antigua." De tal manera describe al grupo M. Walls y Merino, en el prólogo de su traducción de Pigafetta. ¿De qué se trata? ¿"Quiénes son esos hombres" ?-pregunta el citado traductor, repitiendo la de curiosos vecinos y transeúntes. Ei mismo, después de una digresión, da la respuesta :-"Son los marinos que han dado la vuelta al mundo." La noticia no era para menos : dar la vuelta al mundo jamás se había oído : tiene que representar algo extraordinario, tal vez sobrenatural, como dice bien Walls y Merino, quien exclama: "¡ Considérese cuál no sería la impresión que causara a la generalidad de las gentes, en el año 1522 ! ¡Haber dado la vuelta al mundo! Suceso memorable, calificado del más grande Y maravilloso de aquel tiempo que llevó a cabe, por vez primera, un puñado de españoles." Encabezaba el "puñado" Juan Sebastián del Cano, y entre los dieciocho, estaba Pigafetta, el italiano cronista de la expedición de Magallanes. Éste había quedado allá, muerto en Máktang, a manos de los partidarios de Lapulapu.-De las cinco carabelas que partieron de Sanlúcar de Barrameda, en 1519, Por J. En 1899 fallece en Guam, desterrado, el gen. M. Hizon. retornó, infidente, la San Antonio; la Concepción fue desmantelada a vista de Bohol, otras naufragaron: sólo la Victoria, la capitana, había logrado, tras penalidades sin cuento, arribar al puerto de partida. En el puerto· de San Julián (Brasil) hubo motines a bordo; al lugarteniente de Magallanes, Quesada, le dejaron por rebelde en playas de Patagonia; de 265, que ccnstituían la dotación original de los cinco barcos, sólo dieciocho (18) regresaban a España. En Máktang, con l\fagallanes, habían sucumbido ocho; y en el infausto banquete de Cebú, 26 con Duarh~ Barbosa y Juan Serrano; muchos otros fueron falleciendo durante los tres años de penosa navegación. Recuérdese que, como premio a la heroica empresa, Carlos V. regaló Escudo <le armas y a11tógmfo de de/ Ca110. a Del Cano un globo de oro. con la inscripción, Primus circumdedisti rne, y que, en rigor 16gico, esta leyenda debía corresponder a Magallanes, jefe de la expedición, quien al perder la vida en Máktang, ya había "empalmado" dos meridianos opuestos, contando con los recorridos anteriormente, en sus viajes por las M.olucas. Con él comparte h gloria, c·omo primer circunvalador del globo, su esclavo Enrique de Malaka, de quien hay indicios. de ser de C>rigen filipino. La proeza prístina de haber hecho el record de este atrevido y famoso viaje, corresponde al lombardo Antonio Pigafetta, que se agre.;. gó a la expecición como un avenrero de las letras (sobresaliente, según los registros) . Maximiliano Tansilvano, prot.egido por el cardenal de Salsburgo, recogió de labios de Del Cano y compañeros detalles m'va voce, que consignó en carta extensa, texto latino-De M oluccis Insulis-y publicada en Colonia y Roma, 1522. El cronista del rey Pedro Mártir de Angleria también escribió sobre el viaje, siendo éste uno en compartir el privilegio de la impresión con la carta de Transilvano. [9] tenerse Dagohoy, al frente de su gent2, durante los 85 años que se computan como duración de la rebelión?-El alzamien\o de Bohol comenzó .en 1744 y se dió por terminado en 1829: 85 años. Dagohoy debió de iniciarlo, cuando contaría 20 a 25 años de edad; más 85 de duración, 110 años. Inconcebible es que haya tenido vitalidad suficiente para sostener, per Se, la rebeldía, por grande que se suponga su vigor y resistencia. Zaide, en su folleto Dagohoy, reconoce que algunos años antes de darse por acabada la resistencia (1829), ya no se menciona en los documentos oficiales su existencia (pág. 22) ; que los cabecillas Handog y Auag le habían sucedido. Agosto 31, 1829, es el limite que s~ da a la rebelión; suponiendo que Dagohoy haya mantenido su utilidad y energía hasta los 80 u 85 años (que es mucho suponer), todo lo que pudo durar su participación en el movimiento, sería hasta el año 1804, antes d.~ cuya fecha debió de ejercerse la intervención del obispo de Cebú, Ezpeleta, que consta haber estado en contacto con el propio Dagohoy. Por tanto, los últimos 25 años habrían trascurrido sin el leader, que habría quedado fuera de combate. A la preg. [ 13] Lo que piensan de España los extranjeros Es una verdad de sobra conocida el hecho de que quien menos conoce el desarrollo de una batalla, es precisamente quien toma parte en ella desde la trinchera. Claro que la observación personal de una población, o el estudio sicológico de un pueblo, no tienen la trascendencia ni las raudas complicaciones dP una batalla; pero no obstante puede también influenciarse por la forma de estar del observador, así como de su mayor o menor serenidad espiritual. Otro factor personal que puede hacer variar diametralmente la exactitud apreciativa, es la simpatía o antipatía sentida hacia el objeto sometido a observación. Por eso, hoy que trato de dar a mis lectorel!I la impresión objetiva que España pro· duce a los extanjeros, y, ·uan más que España, el español ·y su medio ambiente, no quiero opinar por mi sola impresión subjetiva. En estos días he tenido oportunidad de hablar con gentes procedentes de diversos países, profesores norteamericanos, periodistas europeos, turistas españoles avecindados en Hispano-América, y, en fin, con todo el que ha caído a tiro de mi indiscreción corresponsal. Voy por tanto a contrales a Vds. lo que han visto ellos, sin mas intervención mía que la mera transcripción. Entre los nortearnericnos no he encontrado una unidad de criterio, aparte del elogio a España, a la que podríamos llamar turística, según el concepto de turismo mundialmente reconocido. En cuanto ·a la vida en España las opiniones varían diametralmente en dos direcciones principales: una la del que viene con espíritu inquisidor y crítico, buscando solamente aquéllo que pueda ser criticable corno malo; otro, el que sin prejuicios anteriores viene simplemente a ver lo que se ponga ante sus ojos. Desde luego el primero sale francamente descontento. Encuentra mal que las capiales tengan suburbios, como si las del resto del mundo hubiesen resuelto satisfactoriamente ese problema: y se recrea en fotografiar al pobre harapiento oue espera .en una esquina el paso del transeúnte, para tender la mano en súplica de una limosna (oficio por otra parte de los . más lucrativos en nuestro hermoso país). Este tipo de turista no s~ impresiona por nada bueno, sospechando siempre qué existe alqo infinitamente malo, que no se descubre a simple vista, y que le proporciona el gran Aeropz!erto de Bamjas (Madrid).La actriz francesa Jacqueline Plesses ~ su llegad?' a la capital española, dond; intervendra en el rodaje de una película. disgusto de marcharse a su país sin haberlo descubierto, y considerando a cuantos le han orientado en su visita como a cómplices encargados de ocultar lo que el no ha conseguido ver. El otro tipo de turista norteamericano, más infantil en su burna voluntad, se -limita a admirar lo admirable y a estudiar las causás de lo no admirable; suele tratar de establecer comparaciones con su propia patria y como es lógico no puede concretarles, pues. . . . no son ni parecidas. Pero éste, sí saca conclusiones. Me decia el otro día Miss Agatha Cavallo, profesora de Chicago: Y o comprendo que en nivel de vida y en adelantos científicos y técnicos, Estados Uni_dos están mucho más adelantados que España, pero España, los españoles ti.enen una fuerza espiritual de la qu~ allí carecemos en absoluto. Sin Ese espíritu y con la pobreza actual de la península, España hubiera sucumbido. Efectivamente (ahora hablo yo un poco por mi cuenta), el español está dotado de una fe en su propio valer, en sus personales· cualidades, dignas de enYidia, por situarle en las mejores condiciones para intentar lo más difícil. . . y lograrlo. Con esta opinión mía, se mostraba de acuerdo un compañero de la prensa extranjer&-el Sr. Negr_elli- de [ 14] nacionalidad italiana. Efectivamente, hay bandolerismo---de ninguna manera luchadores políticos, si no sirnple bandolerismo---copia exacta del bandolerismo del siglo XIX, d,~spués de las guerras internas españoles. Y por mi parte puedo asegurarles que para encontrarse con él hay que ir casi a buscarlo expresamente: y conozco casos en que, El atacado, terminó en una perfecta y noble amistad con los atracadores. Tras un año de prueda, poniendo en práctica sus conocimientos teóricos galénicos, se le ofreció la plaza de médico titular de Bataán. Decidió aceptarla abandonando su ya numerosa clientela formada en la rica provincia azucarera referida, dejando el ejercicio particular por la práctica of icial en un cometido público. En camino para su nueva tarea, de paso por Manila para la capital Balanga de la mencionada división territorial (que en 1942 probó y consiguió demostrar a los criminales y sangrientos amarillos su valor y entereza heroicos) cambió de parecer ; en vez de cruzar la bahía de Manila hacia el oeste prefirió el cargo de médico municipal de Mariquina, de reciente creación, marchando por tierra en dirección este, adonde quedó hasta 1891 en cuyo año trasladóse con igual empleo al pueblo de Santa Ana (éste y el anterior eran entonces de la provincia de Manila, en tanto que ahora son, el de Mariquina, de Rizal y, el de Santa Ana, un alfoz urbano manilense) . [ 30] CENA PARA DOS Una cena simple una mesa para dos: siempre hay buena razón para una cena para dos, si queréis impresionar al novio, o, siendo recien casadas, deseáis recordar los días del noviazgo cuando cenabais los dos solitos. No se necesita hacer nada diferente o complicado: un bonito mantel, dos candelabros con sus velas de colores claros, y pocas luces encendidas harán la cena más romántica. Ahora el menú: Una sopa ligera Beef-steak con setas y patatas fritas U na ensalada Flan (para postre). Prepárelo bien con sus propias manos que será una delicia. FLAN. (para dos) Separe las claras de las yemas : pon·ga las yemas en una taza honda y bátalas añadiendo la leche y el azúcar. Añada luego la canela o limón. Prepare en una cacerolita una cuarta parte de una taza de agua y dos cucharadas d.~ azúcar. Póngala a hervir, hasta que se quede almíbar. Cuando esté a punto de quemarse, añada el resto, los huevos y la leche. Póngase a hervir en baño maría, o sea la cacerolita dentro de otra con agua. A la media hora pruebe con un palito si ya está cuajado. Si el palito sale limpio quitelo del fuego y déjelo enfriar. Pase un cuchillo alrededor y trasladarlo a un plato de cristal y está listo para la refrigeradora. RAG1' (ragout) de car!lero: INGREDIENTES: (servicio para seis personas): 1/2 kilo de chuletas carnero 2 zanahorias 3 patatas grandes 1 cebolla 1/ 4 kilo de jamón 1 lata de tomates 1 lata de guisantes. Póngase la carne de carnero en una sartén o cazuela sin manteca. Fríase con su misma grasa. Eliminar un poco de la manteca. Échese dos zanahorias peladas y cortadas a trocitos, una cebolla, pedacitos de jamón, sal, pimienta y 3 patatas cortadas a cuadritos. Fría se todo junto. Añadase una taza de tomates, media taza de agua y déjese a fuego lento hasta que estén blandas las zanahorias y las patatas, y, finalmente, añádase una lata de guisantes. No hay nada tan incómodo como unos zapatos apretados o con el tacón torcido: además de ser antiestético a la l>elleza del pie. Unos zapatos de tacón torcido hacen el andar poco gracioso, sobre todo, señoras, no olvidarse que ·los pies candados se reflejan en el rostro. Cuiden que vuestros zapatos especialmente si son altos, tengan los taconea bien derechos. Por EVA Si tenéis un vestido favorito y quisiereis que la lavandera no os lo estropee al lavarlo, hágalo usted misma. En pocos minutos estará listo para ser planchado. Hay varios preparados llamados RINSE en negro o castaño: nó es un tinte pues solo deja el pelo oscuro hasta el siguiente shampú. Después de cada lavado se enjuaga la cabeza con este RINSE.
