After less than 50 years of A meric:m tutdage, Filipinos, by the millions, we1·e no longo· illiterates. En una revista muy conocida de esta capital hemos leído, precisamente, en su artículo d·e fondo, algunas afirmaciones muy lamentables. Son afirmaciones cuya falta de verdad es evidente para teda persona por poco ilustrada que fuere. Por esto estarnos [3] segures de que, al igual que a nosotros, han debido de contrariar a sus lectores filipinos, cultos o ilustrados. Aun más; estarnos también seguros de que no hay ningún norteamericano verdadero; es decir, de espíritu justo y bien informado, que no tenga que oponer el debido reparo a las afirmaciones aludidas. Dicen éstas que antes de la llegada de los españoles a Filipinas, apenas habría habitante alguno que no sup'.era leer y escribir. Al cabo de tres siglcs y medio de régimen español, apenas había un .filipino que supiera leer y ·escribir. En n;.enos de cincuenta años de régimen norteamericano, millones de filipinos ya no eran an~llfabetos. Tales son las afirmaciones del artículo de fondo de la aludida revista. Como ve el lector, no han podido decirse en poco espacio tan enormes irrealidades. Nos ref~rirnos, naturalmente, al espacio en que se afirma que -el régirner.. español en Filipinas destruyó aquella condición en que se hallaban los habitantes de este Archipiélago, de saber lee1· y escribir. Por grande que fuera el rencor-de uno centra España o la admiración por la obra de Norteamérica en Filipinas, no creernos que podría sus~entarse esa afirmación contra la obra hispana en Filipinas .. La antigüedad misma de tantas instituciones: docentes que, a Dios gracias, subsisten todavía, entte ellas en primer término la gloriosa Universidad fundada por el dominico P. Benavides, bastaría para echar por tierra una afirmación tan apartada de la verdad. No podemos, francamente, conjeturar ningún motivo que explique la afirmación que comentarnos. Porque se trata de una revi~ta en cuya colección sería fácil hallar rnanifestacionés que contradicen por completo la referida. Además, en la empresa que la edita todavía está una personalidad s:rnpática,cuyos sentimientos hispanófilos son bien conocidos y fueron un día públºca y solemnemente reconocidos. Por esto, esa afirmación que no sólo es contraria a la realidad histórica sin~ también injusta e hiriente para España, es doblemente lamentable. Quizá la haya motivado el deseo de hac-er resaltar la obra de N ortearnérica en menes de medio siglo, y, para ello, el articulista creyó necesario ennegrecer el fondo para que mejor· sobresalga la blancura de su elogio a la citada nación. Pero esto es innecesario, y aun es injusto si se hace a costa de la verdad y de España. La gloria norteamericana en Filipinas no requiere esos medios para que sea y siga siendo lo que es. Podría decirse que le sobra luz para que tenga que robar la de los demás. Mientras la verdad misma protesta, nosotros nos limitamos a lamentar que se hayan hecho esas declaraciones que pueden poner obstáculos a la obra de concordia y afecto que les ·hombres de buena voluntad-filipinos, norteaméricanos y españoles-vienen realizando en nuestro pa.ís corno un granito de arena a la empresa mayor de la paz y comprensión entre todos los pueblos de la tierra. :~~~;,~-·:&tl~Ji~. ~. 7 q:-U ¡--·l ~~==~~'-'--------------~------~~~-----~'-~ _ _ _ ¡q~ Entl'euista con Sara Montiel: la princesita mora ele "Locura de Amor". Pulso el timbre. Al cabo de unes segundos de espera me abren la puerta: -Muy buenas ¿La Princesa Aldara? -¿¿Cómo?? -La Princesa Ald ... Me interrumpe la fresca risa de Sara Montiel, que avanza por el pas!llo. Su madre, que me abrió la puerta, le hace coro. -i Ah, claro! Se refiere a Sarita. Pase V d. Entro en una coquetona salita de e~tar, y a la invitación de Sara, me desplomo en un sillón. ¡Uf! i Cinco pisos!. En estos últimos tiempos me he hecho el amo en eso de trepar escalones. Cuando recobro la respiración, inicio jocosamente: -¿Por qué viviréis tan alto los artistas de cine?: ¿será por aquello de que sois estrellas? -i Uy, que chiste más malo! ¿Traes muchos de esos?. -Unos pocos. -Bueno, anda :--empieza tú a preguntar. [4] Antes de comenzar, prendido en su encanto, la contemplo unos segundos. Caramba amigos lectores, y que cosa rebonita es esta Sarita Montiel. La llamo cosa. aun a trueque de que se enfade cuando lea lo que escribo, porque en realidad no sabría clasificarla si como mujer o niña. Tiene toda la gracia y el encanto de una adolescente. bajo una apariencia (¡y qué apariencia, Dios mío'.) de guapa mujer. Sin embargo, esa chispita picarona que brilla en el fondo de sus ojos .. ¡Y qué ojos! ¿Ustedes se han dado cuenta?. Cuando los lectores del sexo feo hayan visto la fotografía que publicamos, se habrán quedado patidifusos. Porque yo. . . Y o pasé el tiempo que duró esta entrevista sentado en el borde del s!llón, y mirándola embobado. Estoy escribiendo este artículo de madrugada, cuando el sofocante calor del sol, ha dado paso a un delicioso airecillo de la Sierra de Guadarrama. Una bebida refrescante al alcance de la mano, y la radio que desliza en la ncche una suave y lejana música. No es extraño que en. este ambiente deje vagar la imaginaci.éin. Pero interrumpe mis elucubraciones una vocecilla que oigo no sé donde y que ¡Ya me lo figuraba yo!, pertenece a mi otro yo : el ser más cascarrabias que conozco. -Sí, tu otro yo! l. Pero es que vas ha escribir una entrevista o un tratado de belleza? . -Hombre, tratándose de Sarita Montiel, es lo mismo una cosa y otra. -Bueno, déjate de galanterías, y al grano. Escribe pronto o no vas a llegar a tiempo de coger el correo aéreo. -¡No seas gruñón! .l Es que no tienes sensibilidad artística? ¿No tienes ojos? -Claro que tengo ojos. Los mismo que tú. Pero yo veo las cosas bajo el prisma profesional. ¡A escribir!. -¿Con esta música tan agradable que invita a soñar ... ?. -¡ i A escribir!!. Suspiro. s:empre, en mis discusiones internas, gana el serio. En fin, ¿qué hemos de hacer?. Y ésta fue, amigos lectores, la entrevista con Sara Montiel, a la que acompañaba un señor que me presentó como don Ángel, su padrino de pila y paternal cancerbero. ·-¿Cuántos años tienes Sarita? -Nací un diez de marzo. . -En plena primavera. ¿De qué año? _-¡De marzo! ·-¡Ejem! Bueno 10 de marzo de hace poquitos añcs. ¿Cómo empezó para ti lo del cine?. -Pues verás. Estuve interna cuatro años en un colegio de Jesús y María. Un día cantando unas saetas en la Semana Santa de Orihuela (Alicante), me conoció don Vicente Casanova, el director de CIFESA. Me llevaren a Valenc:a y me presentaron en un concurso que organizó esa productora. -i Ahá, sí, en los Viveros! Precisamente estaba yo ~n Valencia entonces y traté de presentarme a él, pero me d:jeron que no hacían películas de fieras esa temporada. ¿ Por qué me dirían eso? Ríe Sarita con el candor levemente picareJco, que es la sal de su personalidad acusada. Luego continúa. -Me presentaron al concurso y de cuatrocientas candidatas fui yo la ganadora. Pero como era todavía una niña, (¿Qué se figurará ser ahora, una abuelita ?)-Me tu~ieron tres años estud:ando en el conservatorio bajo la experta dirección de Anita Martos. -¿Al cabo de los cuales? ... -Al cabo de los cuales me hicieron unas pruebas que resultaron estupendas según ellos, y firme un contrato por tres años. Hice mi película primera a los catorce años. Se titulaba "Empezó en boda": y en los cuatro años que llevo en el cine he interpretado 14 películas. Sarita no quería confesar su edad, pero ahora, sin darse cuenta, lo ha dicho. Hagan números y les saldrá la cuenta de les exiguos años de que disfruta la gran estrella del cine español. -¿Tu última película? -"Locura de amor" en el papel de Princesa Árabe. Por cierto que s9 por D. Vicente Casanova, que se proyectó privadamente en Filipinas, y tuvo un magnífico comentário. Así pues, m:s queridos lectores, cuando tengan oportunidad de ver "Locura de amor" habrán de admirar a esta princesita árabe. -Sigue contándome. -Estoy enamorada. -Éso está bien, y, además, es lógico. ¡Si has nacido en marzo, el corazón de la primavera! En fin no te he preguntado de quien. ¡Hay tícs con suerte! ¿ L€es mucho? -Mucho. Sobre todo a Somerset Maugham, André Maurois, Osear Wilde, y Cervantes. -¿Otras aficiones? -Me gusta la pintura : estudio canto hace tres años, y mi ilusión sería interpretar a una mujer perversa y "criminala" (aunque soy muy bueneci~._.). ¡Ah! Tambiln dibujo un poquillo. -¡Caramba Sarita, eres un portento! ¿No me dirás que tambifn sabes cocinar? -Claro que sé cocinar. ¿Que te habías creído"? ... --o-Hemos regalado a Sara un número de "Semana" : -¿Te gusta la revista? . -Ya lo creo que me gusta. Mu~ chísimo. Y dí que me gustaría mucho conocer Filipinas; y que envíu un saludo cariñoso de verdad a todo aquel país: ¡ de todo corazón! Y aquí tienes una fr.tografía dedicada a "Semana" : . Que pongan la dedicatoria en letras de imprenta, por si no se entiende mi letra. -De acuerdo, Sarita Montiel. Todo, todo lo diré. Y estoy seguro que el pueblo filipino al conocer tus magistrales interpretaciones, te entregará su corazón : igual que lo ha hecho el español: y recibirá emocionado ese cariñoso saludo que le envías ven'do directamente del corazón. No hemos de desearte que triunfes, porque triunfaste· ya, pero sí que continúes tan bonita y tan ma.gnífiea actriz. ¿Satisfecho ya mi "otro yo", serio y malhumorado? Pues, ·mis queridos lectores, yo les emplazo y espero que al contemplar la fotografía de Sarita. sentirán algo de benevolenc: a hacia mi "yo" jo vial y pillín, que en pugna con el cascarrabias. no tenía ganas de escribir esta noche, pensando en la carita bella y simpática de SARA MONTIEL: una de las más jóvenes y mejores actrices del cine español : y pronto. estamos seguros, del cine mundial ... EMBAJADORES IDEALES Por FEDE1HCO (Pipo) CAl ERO Filipinas, la última de las hijas de la vieja Madre España en obtener su independencia polít~ca, ha recib:do siempre con l:s brazos abiertos a los embajadores del ideal hispano que en misión de paz y cultura llegaron a nosotros portadores de un saludo maternal y efusivo de la Vieja Madre. Federico García Sanchiz, el ,de las charlas cascabeleras y castizamente hispanas. Antonio de Goicoechea, talentudo y lapidario conferencista. Carlos Blanco Soler, forjadcr de maravillosas leyendas, médico y literato, sólido adalid de las grandezas españolas. Estos y muchos más vinieron predicando el evangelio de la cultura. la religión y el idicma hispanos y esculpieron en el granito de nuestra histeria los capítulos más brillantes del genio español. Todos ell::s, que supieron hablarnos de las grand·ezas y conquistas espirituales ce la brava leona de Castilla. Todos ellos. menos uno : Perico Chicote, que vino, segun él, a refocilarse en los encantos de este país trcpical tan exótico y, al mismo tiempo, tan español. Perico Chicote que no trajo más credenciales · que la castiza alegría madrileña y la desbordante simpatía del madrileño más popular de la Gran Vía: Perico Chicote que vino a conocernos de cerca y que ya habrá aprendido a estas horas a querernos de lejos. Poque Perico Chicote nos habló de Madrid como algo sobrenatural y excelso. Nos contagió de rn optimismo y nos infundió alientos para seguir queriendo a España. Nos h!!.bló de cosas ligeras de la España siempre - de sus tranvías y sus verbenas, de sus mujeres y sus flor~s. de sus ferias y sus procesiones, de la Cibeles y la calle de Alcalá, de sus .cafés y sus tertulias, de sus ansias y sus alegrías, de sus loterías y sus tascas. Nos habló de su gobierno y sus gobernantes sin rencores ni censuras, pero vehementemente, apasionadamente, con la ilus:ón del que habiendo visto cesas grandes en el mundo que recorr'.ó de extremo a extremo varias veces, prefirió siempre t;do lo que su patria ofrece a sus hijos y a los que la vi.sitan-paz, orden, cultura, religión, artes, ciencias y, rnbre todo, algo que no cono':'.en en otras partes del mundc·-la alegría del vivir. Perico Chicote que vino a nosotros a hablarnos de sus "co::ktails" y los estupendos vinos d•e España. Que nos tarareó chotises y pasadobles. Que nos ensalzó lidias y se puso triste al hablarnos de Manolete. Qu"P nos cantó flamenco y nos relató anécdotas. Que vino alegre y se fue emocionado. Que al ganarse- nuestras simpatías se llevó nuestros suspiros de volver a Madrid con las ansias del hijo pródigo de volver al regazo de su madre ... Vengan, pues, a nosotros embajadores diplomáticas y enciclopédicos. Vengan hombres de ciencia y literatos de postín. Vengan evangelizadores que nos guíen pcr el camino del bien y la verdad. Pero vengan también embajadores ideales c:omo Perico Chicote, que chicolea con nuestras mozas, que alterna con nuestrcs estudiantes. que se divierte con nuestros hijos y tesa car:ñosamente a nuestras v:ejas. Veng:m también españoles quienes, como Chicote, sepan hat lnrn ::s de las mil y un cosas lige!'2s de España, y consiga que la amemos aun más porque es buena. porque es castiza, porque es alegre y porque es nuestra Madre. ¡ Perico Chicote ha pasado por Filipinas como una ráfaga, pero ha dejado en el cielo de nuestras ilus!ones y nuestros recuerdos una estela maravillosa de alegría, de luz y de colores! . Y con Perico Chico~ que lo repitió aquí muchas veces, sólo nos queda gritar : ¡Arriba España! ¡ Viva Filipinas! Humor osezno madroñero imperó y se derrochó en la reunión. Iniciadores del acontecimiento, les doctores Bantug y Peñaflor. Cooperadcres, mediante personal e intransf erib!e asistencia, los doctores Alomia, Asís, Borromeo, Cabarrús, Delgado, Rodríguez y Yaptinchay, el académico Barcelón, y los directores de "Las Noticias" y "Voz de Manila" Molina Martell y de la Paz. [ 6 1 Por fortuna, estuvieron ausentes los fot<?tipistas pegajosos e inoportunos. · Churros de calidad mojados en chocolate E se sirvier6n calentitos, se consumieron con deleite y no causaron indigestión; se adquirieron; casi de ganga, a escote. Vicente Madrigal Sept. 16, 1949. ¡Virgen de Peñafrancia y Región Bicolana ! Dos términos inseparables; dos ideas unidas para siempre jamás. ¿Por que? Porque la Virgen de Peñafrancia es una Virg<m Bicolana. Y cada bicolano nace hijo e!~ la Virgen de Peñafrancia. F.moción constante, tierno amor, pensamiento eterno de cada bicolano, la Virgen .de Peñafrancia es para él Compañera fiel e infalible. Sendero de la verdad, es su guía en la vida. Modelo de virtudes, es padrón al que han de amoldarse Ji acomodarse sus maneras y costumbres. ¿Y cómo se demuestra este afecte> intenso y perenne en el corazón de los bicolanos? Primero, la indispensable presencia de la imagen de la Virgen en cada hogar. Desde las montañosas regioms de Camarines Norte hasta las inmensas llanura.;; de Masbate, sea en palacio de rico hacendero o en choza de pobre labrador, la Santa Patrona reina en cada hogar, ya entronada eri lujoso altar, ya expuesta conspicuamente en cuadro o aun en diminuta estampa. Segundo, la concurrencia de innumerables devotos a la memorable peregrinación anual que se hace al Santuario de la Virgen, precisamente durante este mes d~ i:eptiembre. Es ésta una singular ocasión a la que toda la Región acude y se reúne e:n la progresiva y muy culta Ciudad de Naga. La caractJerizan dos sucesos notables: La procesión fluvial el sábado por la tarde; y las misas en el día siguiente. La procesión __f~uvial se celebra en el río de Naga, llamado también de San Felipe. Sobre una "Pagoda" de caña ricamente empavesada, emprende la Virgen el viaje en el río, desde el Puente de Tabuco hasta Peñafrancia, acompañada por personajes del Clero y del Gobierno, la imagen del Divino Rostro, el Coro de Seminario, y una banda de música. Luego de breves ceremonias en el puente, empieza la emocionante procesión. La "pagoda" va estirada por una infinidad de banqueros usando palas y tocones de caña con lazos y campanillas, gritando vivas y ¡hurra! a la Virgen y al Divino Rostro, al paso, que el Coro y la banda ejecutan himnos escogidos para la ocasión. Peñafrancía N del Tenemos el honor de 1·eproduci~ a continuación el magníiico discurso radiado el 16 _de corrie~1!e por el H'!n. Vicente Madrigal, referente a 111 mtlagr?sa l 1Tge11 de Pen'!,fran_cia, que se venera no sólo en l:'aga sino en to~a la regwn bicolana y cuya fiesta se solemniza en cada ~ep,ti~mbre. Poi" su belleza descriptiva de la.~ costumbres del hwtonco cuanto gentil pueblo de Naga, así como de la simpática regí?~ bicolana; y por el sa.bor. pintoresco '!! emo.tivo ~e su narracwn, tenemos lll 11egurfrlad de que esta p1ez.a literaria del honorable senador J.1ad.rigal, hijo de la Bicolandia, gustará ~ nuestros lectores y po·r eso la reproducimos. Entretanto, en ambas orillas, devotas y devotos, candela en mano; forman hileras a lo largo del río y ven pasar la procesión, musitando oraciones. Es un espoctáculo inolvidable. En la oscuridad de la noche la "pagoda" parece un carro luminoso que avanza lentamente entre dos líneas de rutilantes estrellas. Las misas del día siguiente son también memorables. Se celctran en una vieja capilla en el barrio de Peñafrancia, al final de una larga avenida llamada Vía Gainza. Entre sementeras, árboles frondosos y el río de San Felipe, el lugar constituye un retiro pintoresco. Todo ·espacio dentro y fuera de la capilla queda ocupado. Mineros de Paracale y Caramoan; pescadores de Bulan y Virac; msrcaderes de Legazpi y Tabaco; devotos descalzos del Isarog acuden a rendir sensible homenaje a su venerada Patrona. Se oyen misas, oraciones; en el coro, ingenuas tiples cantan las notas sublimes del himno que di<: e: "Oh María sin pecado concebida rogad por Nos que recurrimos a Vos"; mientras filas de mujeres se dirigen de rodillas hacia el radiante altar mayor. Aquí se encuentra el objeto físico, material, de toda esta universal manifestación de amor. Es una pequeña imagen, de cara muy morena, regiamente vestida y ante una aureola de piedras preciosas destácase su corona de brillantes, con incrustaciones de zafiros y rubíes; ¡digno ropaje para una verdadera reina Bicolana ! La pasada Guerra Mundial proporcionó una excelente ocasión para patentizar una vez más el gran amor de los bicolanos a su Santa Protectora. [7] En medio de graves peligros y obstáculos durante la ocupación Japonesa, las peregrinaciones nunca se interrumpieron. Cada mes de septiembre, por tres años, peregrinos venían a N aga en busca de la confortante celebración de Peñafrancia. Liegaban en carretas, en bancas, a caballo y muchas vece!I a pie. Y regresaban después a sus remotos; hogares con nuevos bríos, ~on nuevas esperanzas para sobrellevar los rigores de la guerra y del enemigo. He aquí que digo que la Virgen de Peñafrancia y la Región Bicolana son dos conceptos inseparables. Enlazada en la vida de sus habitantes, la Virgen es más que una devoción o una fe, es más aun que faro en la raigambre de ese afortunado pueblo-es, la misma Alma dP.l Bicol ! He dicho. Efemérides Filipinas EL PRIMER CRONISTA RELIGIOSO Septiembre 16, 1635. Esta fecha es la de la muerte de aquel egregio varón, que se llamó Pedro Chirino, a los 68 años de edad, en Manila. Fué modelo de misioneros. a la vez que hombre de cienc:a y letras, y como tal, le consideramos El primer cronista relinioso, que lo fué, según nuestro conocimiento. De los escritores religiosos de nuestra Historia, no recordamos de ninguno que se le haya anticipado, en punto a editar sus obras: ni Aduarte (dominico), ni Sa~ Antonio (franciscano), ni San Agustín, Martínez Zúñiga y Casimiro Dlaz (agustinos), ni Concepción (recoleto) , ni ningún otro ¡Se le adelantan: el P. Chirino escribió su Relación de las Islas Filipinas y de lo que en ellas han trabajado los Padres de la C<nnpañía de Jesús, la llevó a Roma en 1602 y la publicó allá en 1604. Nadie, antes que él, dió a conocer en Europa lo que eran las Islas, ni aun Morga (México, 1609) : el relato fragmentario, del P. Sanctisteban (agustino), de la expedición Villalobos (1542) se contrae a los incidentes del viaje y algún que otro rasgo de los naturales, sus artes y armas; complemento de lo de Sanctisteban es la Relación del capitán Descalante. En cuanto a 103 Sucesos, de Morga, casi coetáne3 de la Relación del P. Ch:rino, creemos que las hipótesis y divagaciones de Retana, si no "deciden" en pro de Chirino, inclinan el criterio a su favor; el hecho es que, en punto a años, Chirino tiene Roma, 1604, y Morgfl, México, 1609 : las cifras son gráficas por mucho que se divague. Sept. 17, 1604.-Llega a Vigo, Espafia, tras un largo viaje de 17 meses, pasando por el Cabo, la nao "San Roque". una de las más grandes que operaron por estos marei1. Sevt. 18, 1694.-El gob. D. Zalbálburu sucede en el gobierno al gob. Cruzat Góngora. En 1865 el gobierno expide circular 11obre el "sanctorum" Que debía corresponder a las parroquias. En 1869 naca en Manila el que fué diput1'.do por Cagayán, Pablo Guzmán; en 1882. en Pasukin, 11. N., Irineo Ranjo; en 1888. en S. Pablo, Lag., Tomás Dizon; y en 1889, en Maasin, Leyte, Tomás Oppus. Sept. 19, 1874.-0dénase de sacerdote Mons. J. Barlín. En 1881 nace en Manila José G. Generoso, y en 1882, m Dag-upan, Pang., Rodrigo D. Pérez. Sept. 20, 1871.-Nace en Ban¡r-ued, Abra, Eustaquio Purugganan; en 1888, en Haniway, lloílo, Federico- R, Tirador: en 1894, en Donsol, Sorsogón, Tomás S. Clemente, y en 1896, en Dulawan, Kotabato, Ugalingan PianK". Sept. 21, 1678.-La Audiencia y los oidores Coloma y Sotomayor interinaron en el g-obierno, a la muerte del gob. De León. En 1678, llega el gob. Juan de VarK"aS Hurtado, el que tuvo conflicto con el arz. Pardo; excomulgado cesó en agosto de 1684, falleciendo durante el viaje en 1690. En 1745, comienza la interinidad en el gobierno, del arz. Arechederra, interinidad que dura 6 años. Fallece en este año el gob. G. de la Torre. En 1865 nace en Culión el dip. Santiago Patero. Sept. 22, 1762.-Trece buques del almirante inglés Cornish entran en bahía, intimando su rendición, que da lugar a la toma de Manila. En 1872 nace en Manila el que fué diputado por Tárlac Mauricio llagan. Edad el descubrimiento de lo que designaremos por "la Doctrina de Dasmariñas", de 1593. Porque da la casualidad que, siendo el P. Chirino el primer jesuíta misionero en estas Islas, él vino con el gobernador Pérez Dasmariñas ( 1590), el mismo que envió a Felipe II el pr:mer impreso de 1593. Pues b:en: lo remitido por el gobern2dor a su rey, apenas produjo curios~dad en Europa; en cambio, la revelación contenida en la Relación del P. Chirino, de que aquí [ 8 ] había un pueblo con variedad de lenguas y que poseía propia escritura, dibió de impresionar no poco. Mucho hicieron, en espíritus curiosos, Maxim:Lano Transilvano Y Pedro Mártir de Anglería, revelando informes de "los que habían sido les primeros en circunvalar el globo", de los que el relato 'chiriniano" era confirmación y una amplificación. Pues bien: a la vez que se daba a conocer, en el libro del P. Chirino, nuestro alfabeto original, el misionero echaba mano de su c~ tequesis, ofreciendc como muestras escr:tura y texto del avemaría .. ¿No era excitantemente curioso? Lo era, sin necesidad de ponderación. Y aquí viene la concomitancia con Pérez Dasmariñas. Retana, en su monumental Aparato bibliográfico, reproduce la letra del avemaría. ¿Sabe el lector que es exactamente la misma que figura en la Doctrina de Dasmar:ñas? Héla aquí (suprimimos su correspondencia española, para abreviar la cita) : Abá, g:ºnoong María, rnatuwá ka na, napoponó ka nang gracia, ang Panginoong Dios na saiyo. Bukod kang pinagpala, sa babaying lahat. Pinagpala na man ang iyong anak si Jesus. Santa María. iná nang Dios, ipanalangin mo ka mí rnakasalanan, ngayon at kung mamatay kamí. Amen Jesus. Los textos son exactamente iguales, y la letra del rezo se ha conservado, con ligera variante, de 1593 .a 1949. Volvamos a la Relación del P. Chirino. Es el resultado de su labar como misionero y como hombre cultísimo en letras, como puede observarse en sus observaciones sobre el tagalo en comparación con el hebreo, el gr:ego, latín y español; animábale, además, un espíritu benévolo, siempre dispuesto a tomar las cosas a buena parte. - Viajó mucho, entre las islas, de Luzón a Visayas, y viceversa, cultivando sus lenguas, lo que le sirvió grandemente en su misión. Su Relación - aparte detalles descriptivos de los lugares que recorría o donde demoraba - contiene noticias curiosas en costumbres, casamientos, creencias, supersticiones, etc., y desde luego, la narración de hechos en gran parte catequísticos: son geografía e historia de aquellos tiempos, y así se comprende que, de un voluminoso manuscrito que dejó inedito el P. Chirino, se haya aprovechado copiosamente Morga, para enriquecer el capítulo octavo de sus Sucesos, y que su co-jesuíta P. Colín haya tomado orientación para su reputada Labor evangélica: y aun quedó bastante material para documentar abundantemente la segunda edición que de la misma obra hizo el P. Pastells en 1910, triplicando y hasta quintuplicando el original, que lo extendió a tres volúmenes de apretada lectura. El P. Chirino se ausentó de las Islas- como queda indicado - P.n 1602; residió en Roma, de procurador de su Orden, y volvió a Filipinas en 1606. Aquí permaneció constantemente, hasta su muerte, en 16 de setiembre de 1635, apreciado de muchos, bendecido de les isleños: y admirado, grandemente admirado, de propios y extraños. PREGUNTAS Y REPUESTAS Antes que otra cosa, séanos permitido consignar una rectificación a otra. En la edición anterior, "rectificamos" la fecha del arribo a España, del resto de la expedición magallánica, encajándolo en aeptiembre 9, para concordarlo con ~n pasaje de W alls y Merino, que describe un grupo de marinos harapientos-los primeros en dar le vuelta al mundo, - en día c'Jmo el mencionado (sept. 9). Resulta que, históricamente P.l ·arribo de los expedicionarios, en San~ lúcar de Barrameda, ocurrió el día· anttrior, u ocho de aeptiembre. Las palabras de Pigafetta son como siguen: "El lunes, 8 de septiembre, fondeamos cerca del muelle de_ Sevilla, y se disparó toda la artillería." Que así conste, en honor de la exactitud. No. 66.-Es cosa generalmente admitida que, a la llegada de los primeros españoles, no existía carnero en las Islas : ¡,cómo nació la voz tagala tupa (carnero)'.' No. 67.-¿Cuándo se dijo la "primera misa" en Cebú? No. 68.-¿ Quién fué el autor de Par11.aso filipino (no la colección de poesías hecha por E. Martín de la Cámara, en 1923.)? CONTESTACIONES:·· A la preg. No. 59. "¿Qué tiene el tabaco de Jaro, que tanto lo bendicen?De refrán a refrán, dicen que los "jareños" contestan: "A quien Dios se lo dió, San Pedro que lo bendiga." En serio: no se trata de Jaro, el pueblo inmediato a Iloílo, sino otro Jaro, en Leyte: es un pueblo interior, situado casi en las estribaciones del alto Amandiwing: de Karigara, su situación es al sur (unos 14 kilómEtros de distancia) ; de la capital, Tacloban, al noroeste, pasando por los pueblos de Palo y Alangah1ng: de esw segundo punto a Jaro, es subiendo suavemente. Pues bien: en tiempo de los españoles, Jaro había cobrado fama por su exc*'l ~nte tabaco: sus hojas no eran grandes: su aspecto, nada especial. Pero Jaro había pertenecido a la administración de padres franciscanos; y, entonces, cura que haya tenido la fortuna de regentar su parroquia, no podía dejar de fumar su tabaco. Los frailes franciscanos uan buenos tabaquistas: ¿qué tendría el tabaco de Jaro, que así lo apreciaban? --Decían que su calidad era media, no fuerte; pero con aroma especial, que no tenía el tabaco de Barili (Cebú), que también cobró reputación, ni los famosos de Cagayán; además, el tabaco de Jaro no producía carraspera en la garganta, como ocurre a ot1os no bien curados. ¿Qué tenía, pues, tal tabaco, que asi era bendito? Y ¿qué ha sido de las bendiciones de otro tiempo? Porque ya hoy, no las olmos, ni parece que su producción presente sea de alguna monta. A la preg. No. 60, sobre el kiosco en en la plaza de la Libertad, Cebú (por error, se puso "plaza de Recoletos"). Un amigo nuestro--hombre eminente en política-nos preguntaba, hace años: "¿Es allí donde se celebró la primera misa en Filipinas?" Tuvimos que desengañarle: no, no fué allí, que eso fué en 31 de marzo de 1521 y en Limasawa (una islita adyacente a Leyte). El quiosco de la plaza de la Libel'tad cobija una cruz, que la tradición cree haberse erigido por orden del propio Magallanes y que en el sitio se dijo la "primera misa" en Cebú. Recuérdese que los castellanos no demoraron allí sino desde abril 7 hasta mayo 2: 25 días. Los padres agustinos, que tienen su i¡rlesia y convento en las inmediaciones del kiosco, han publicado hace algunos años un folletito con el título, The History of Auguatinian Monastery of Santo Niño of Ce!>:( (sin año). Texto inglés y español; en la derecha, su introducción está encabezada, "Iglesia Y Convento del Santo Niño y sus Precedentes Históricos." Copiamos de su apartado, "La Cruz de Magallanes": "Esta Cruz--cuenta la historia-después de la expulsión de los españoles y de la apostasía de los naturales de la Fe, por más diligencias qU'e hizo su ingratitud, nunca se dejó arrancar;" y para corroborarlo, se cita al cronista Herrera, quien refiriéndose a la Cruz, después del infortunado banquete, en que sucumbieron varios capitanes españoles, se afirma que los isleños "trataron dP. arrancarla, pero mientras las Naos lo pudieron ver, conocieron que no la pudieron derribar." El P. Pastells, que escribió sus notas históricas sobre los documentos del Archivo de Indias, de Sevilla, dice por su parte a este respecto: "Los españoles que habían quedado a bordo de ellas (de las naves), oyeron los lamentos de sus camaradas, y vieron cómo los infieles DESTROZABAN la crnz colocada sobre un árbol de la playa . .. " Esto, como decimos, está trabajado sobre origin¡lles guardados en aquel Archivo. Cómo se conservó la Cruz-durante el interregno entra las expediciones de Magallanes y Legazpi, 44 años-no se sabe. Los agustinos dicen que el P. Urdaneta, que acompañaba a Legazpi, plantó igualmente otra cruz, frente a la casa provisional que había servido de vivienda a los religiosos de su orden ; cruz que había sido favorecida con el milagro de haberse salvado de un incendio que había devorado las casas al rededor suyo; y que ésta, o la de Magallanes, es conocida por la "Cruz de los españoles". Para esa Cruz se había edificado, hacia mediados del siglo XVIII, un templete, y que el año 1834, se le cercó con madera de tíndalo, para evitar que la "piedad destructora" de la gente, estropease el santo madero. Un dato más sobre este quiosco y esta Cruz: tenemos a la vista una postal con la siguiente leyenda: Chapel kousi-ng Magellan's Cross, Plaza Rizal, Cebú. ¿En qué quedamos: Plaza Rizal o Plaza de la Libertad? El sufrimiento se ha naturalizado chino y el dolor secular de la raza se cristalizó en la anciana paciencia con que parece estar amasado el temperamento riacional. Amarguras nacidas de impulso autóctono, a veces, y a veces emigradas del extranjero. Sus propios hijos la han desentrañado miles de ocasiones, en interminables luchas intestinas por la primacía nacional. Cuando no sus hijos, fueron los extraños quienes la domeñaron y rindieron a servidumbre ... Innúmeras páginas tristes de SJ historia. Pero tal vez . . . tal vez ninguna más lóbrega y llorosa, que la grabada actualmente a martillazos rusos, por los hijos bastardos de China. Pobre patria, se desangra y languidece, cuando precisamente parecía quererse abrir al beso de paz que le brindaba Jesucristo. Pasada la pesadilla de su guerra con Japón, la Iglesia se adivinaba triunfadora. El optimismo y la fe en la conquista bullían y ansiaban en cada misionero. Trabajo social incoado en todos los centros importantes de la industria y el comercio; obra educacional de indubitable envergadura-Universidades, colegios, escuelas por todas partes-, ruptura de nuevos campos en el interior, allá en la China virgen de los .campos de arroz y de los morenos trigales : todo era una promesa henchida que despuntaba con preludios radiantes de vida medular y cristiana. ¿Y hoy?¿ Ya no es sino algo que fue? El Communismo-avance arrollador-cubre la China; ya se extiende casi tanto como sus costas. Las misiones católicas-automáticamente, lógicamente - pierden ~- ·-:-··~-- . - -·~------------ ·-----,····--·----.....,.., Tras las pagodas, China: Antaño país de leyendas, y ogaño arroyo de sangre mártir . .. vigor, muchas mueren. En Yanchou-'--misión jesuíta de los Padres de California-, para no citar más que lo que se sabe a ciencia cierta, los misioneros ya no pueden hoy ni decir Misa. En el Norte, allá donde la dictadura e-0munista se implató hace apenas medio año, ya se ven los "venerables bigotes" de Pepe Stalin sobre el Sagrario-hoy desierto de las antiguas Iglesias, en el mismísimo sitio de donde fue arrancada "el oscurantismo de la Cruz". Stalin viene ahora a salvar a China, a libertarla, a vivificarla. Jesucristo le estorba. Los ataques del comunismo--en cuanto cesa la farándula de las primeras aclimataciones- son directos, certeros, terribles y férreamente lógicos. Por otra parte nada tienen de raro. La Iglesia es antípoda, en sus principios, del comunismo. Los misioneros integran la Iglesia, lanzan la semilla católica .. por tanto al "pozo con ellos". Mientran menos sean, menos enemigos, menos batallas, más probalidades de triunfo. Admiro, en verdad, la lógicaúnicamente la lógica-comunista Querido Lector Si Vd. es uno de los infortunados que necesita del uso de lentes, para distancia, o para leer, o ambas cosas, antes de adquirir sus gafas, averigüe quién es uno de los mejores Optómetras y ópticos, para que le examine la vista, y le haga las gafas o lentes adecuados. Recuerde que el comprar unas gafas no es lo mismo que el comprar un par de zapatos; y que si por comprar unas gafas mal graduadas, o mal adaptadas, o con cristales defectuosos, su vista se estropea: ¿en dónde podrá comprar un par de ojos nuevos? Su Santidad el Papa Pío XI -el Papa de las misiones- me enseñó la lección. "Este pueblo - el comunista- tiene un ideal que les ha cautivado. Cuando es necesario, sabe sufrir por él y aun exponer su vida por defenderlo. Esta es su fuerza." ¡,Los medios? Eso no tiene para ellos ninguna importancia. Cualquiera es l'ueno si con él logran su intento. ¿,Se requiere desenfrenar las más animales de laa pasiones humanas'? ¿,Qué ·se los impide ... ? ¿Hace falta enemistar a les hijos c:n sus padres para m:nar y destruír la familia? Tienen métodos especializados. ¿Estorban los enemigos? Que desaparezcan misteriosamente. Sólo pretende este pueblo conquistar, ip.sasiable sed de conquista les devora. . . las armas son lo de menos. No hay ley moral que los apriete. La conquista es su ley y a ella tienden con lógica admirable, - solo lógicamente, lo repito-- admirable. Se comprenden, a esta luz, sus métodos para con los misioneros, se adivina lo que el comunismo reserva para los miembros de la Iglesia. Es natural, muy natural, que el misionero sea encerrado en su propia casa, s:n poder siquiera salir a tomar al aire ,por la ciudad. Se comprende cómo algunos han enfermado, hundidos en su prisión, y han menguado, agonizado y ... marchado al cielo. Valga otro tanto de los cristianos. Si no apostatan y cumulan acusaciones falsas en contra de los misioneros, lo más natural es que pierdan el empleo, los amigos, la salud y ... la v:da. La lógica de la estepas moscovitas es admirable, es férrea, pero es también sangrienta. A solas, nó: porque lloran conmigo tu padre y hermanos, recordando el florilegio selecto que tú dejaste con afán en tu jardín de Epicuro, durante tu tránsito por esta existencia. Es más difícil escribir en prosa lírica, en prosa fina y correcta que en poesía, porque aquélla no goza de las licencias retóricas que esta última disfruta. Además, la poesía es mi arma de lucha y admonición, y mi prosa de amistad y recuerdo : por eso hoy te escribo en prosa, llana, sencilla, verbo de las muchedumbres: para que llegue este recuerdo al corazón del mundo. Soy cobarde para el dolor, nó para la lucha, la muerte o el sacrificio. Y de aquella suprema trinidad de maestro~ consagrados, nació la última trinidad de bohemios, Valjean, Floriam y Renán. Uno tras otro se fueron, antes que nosctros, en busca de un parnaso más puro y mejor. Y antes de la bárbara ocupación, aun '1:Ívíamos. Meses antes de tu muerte, tres meses escasos, todavía disfrutamos de una charla lírica frente al Casino Español, también hoy escombros y lagartijas. Pero un día, tú que ·odiabas tanto a los bárbaros invasores, vinieron a arrestarte en la calle de Santa Poten'ciana, donde entonces vivías, solo con tus manuscritcs. Y tenías la Antología completa de poetas filipinos, tus "Horas Azules" que yo mismo hab1a comenzado a prologar. Rebelde a teda tiranía y confiándote en la justic!a de unas c2.ricaturas ignoble~ y crueles del g3nero humano, te negaste a dejar la Ciudad Murada. Estabas enamrrado de Intramuros, la ciudad de Legazpi, de tu<; ensueños y tus musas. Tu obstinación te llevó al martirio. La soldade3ca cobarde, enloquerida por un miedo irresistible, te llevó al Fuerte de Santiago. Tu "Antología" y "Tus Horas Azules", encend:eron la hoguera de tu martirio. Te tomaron por un espía peligroso los seres infer:ores de la raza humana, por causa de tus libros y manuscritos. ¡Cómo te habrás reído, Floriam, en el Fuerte de Sant!agc, donde también Rizal pasó sus últimos días! Su nombre se me hizo al fin asequible, pero al verla en compaña de otro, la decepción que sufrí fue. también muy horrible. -¡ ¡ Mardita i::.ea ! ! ... Hoy voy a ocuparme, objetivamente, de dos sucesos ordinarios en el Madriz de aquel entonces. . . ___ _ - 0 - Dos cosas hay típicas en Madrid que le carecter:zan, distinguiéndole del resto de las otras grandes cap:tales del mundo, a saber: las Verbenas y las hue~gas. Las Verbenas-no sé si llegaré a explicarlas como de3eara -son unas fiestas de carácter genuinamente religioso, pues que se celebran bajo la advocación de algún santo o santa : y así tenemos la Verbena de San Antonio de la Florida, la de Santiago Apóstol, la de la Virgen de Atocha, la de la Virgen de la Paloma, la del Carmen y ctras muchas que no recuerdo en este momento. Me limitaré a ocuparme de una Verbena, s'.n duda la más sonada, y ·es la conocida con el nombre de Verbena de ''La Cara de Dios." Esta Verl:ena se celebra el mismo día de Viernes Santo, día en que los católio:s deb'.an dedicarse más bien a la meditac:ón y al recogimiento y no a celebrar una Verbena, profanando un día tan digno de respeto y venera·c:ón bajo el pretexto de adorar la Cara de Dios. A la entrada de la espaciosa caPor ARIVOR -111lle de la Princesa, hay, a mano derecha, una p-equeña capilla en la cual, según antigua tradición, !>e conserva el verdadero lienzo, en el que quedó esculpida la Cara de Dios, cuando en su Santa Pasión secó su divino rostro bañado en sangre, la Verónica. No qu'.er::; hacer com<mtarios sobre la auten:icidad de aquella p1 cciada reliquia, porque seguramente ¡:,erdería el t:empo y nada práctico conseguiría: pero lo cie:rto es, que el pueblo de Sevilla pretende también tener el legítimo lienzo de la Verónica, negando al que se venera en Madrid toda autenticidad. Ignoro quién de los des pueblos tenga la razón y, por lo tanto, cuál sea el verdadero: aunque a decir verdad, más bien me inclino a creer que ni el uno ni el otro son el auténtico. ¡Cualquiera sabe dónde está ! Como he dicho antes, aquella Verbena se llama la de "La Cara de Dios", y a ella acuden gentes de todas las clases sociales, luciendo las mujeres vistosos y lujosos mantones de Manila, con lindos y Drama religioso .. En dicha Verbena, hay puestos en los que se expenden los llamad:::s ¡oh profanación! pitos del Santo, que son una especie de flautas constru'.das de madera tosca o sencilla y cubiertas al exterior de florecillas y hojas artificiales. También expenden otros puestos un variado surtido de escapularios, cuadritos con la imagen de la Cara de D:os, medallas, etc. etc. Como es natural algunos· ·expenden nueces, avellanas, cacahuetes (ma~í) castañas, rosquillas del Santo. buñuelos, churros (de la familia de los buñuelos), Y otros comestibles de menor cuantía. No faltan tampoco los corresp::: ndientes puestos en donde se vende sin tasa y sin descanso, toda clase de bebidas y vinos: con lo cual fácilmente comprenderá el lector, que la adoración a la Cara de Dios, termina casi siempre con un crecido número de borracheras, en las que no faltan como es claro, las consiguientes riñas, y navajadas, consecuencia del alcohol, suministrado al por mayor. Hay Hc!emás otros vendedores al menudeo que expenden unas estampas o cuadritos de diversos tamaños, en los que está pintado el rcstro del Señor, y sin duda para llamar más la atención del público hac:a la mercancía, van gritando desaforadamente: -¡A cuarto Y a dos, la Cara de Dios! Esta Verbena empieza a las 5 de 'la madrugada y regularmente termina a las doce del día. En otras Verbenas se organizan también los correspondientes bailecitos al aire libre y al són del clásico organillo : para lo cual se Preparan sencillamente y a la ligera, locales ad hoc en la misma vía pública. Contribuyen también a la animación inumerables castillos dt: fuegos artificiales, e infinidad de cohetes y petardos. En resumen, lo característico y lo que nunca falta en todas las Verbenas, es mucha alegría y algazara, muchos mantones de Manila, muchos baile;:;, las consabidas rosquillas y pitos del Santo, infinidad de borracheras, riñas, pendencias, y alguna que otra puñalada: sin contar algunos otros delitos pivados a que dan origen y motivo aquellas fiestas, y los cuales no mencicno aquí por ser de los que no dan lugar a procedimiento de oficio. ¡Y todo esto a pretexto de adorar un Santo, o conmemorar un milagro! LA El toreo oomo deporte Una gran_ mayoría de los españoles serían toreros si tuviesen en su juventud un medio ambie'Rte adecuado. No es posible estar en España. y no hablar frecuentemente de la fieita de tol'!os, como el corresponsal en Londres hablará del f utbol y el golf, cual deportes típicamente anglosajones. No es que yo entienda del arte del toreo con el detalle preciso para considerarme "buen aficionado", pero sí he procurado, en honor de mis lectores filipinos, desentrañar un poco los fundamentos del valor torero. Considerado desde el punto de vista deportivo, no veo ningún inconveniente en calificar los toros como un deporte, si bien tiene una diferencia fundamental con los otros deportes conocidos : el valor que se necesita para enfrentarse con un testuz de negros pelos rizados, flanquedo por dos ojos de fiel'!o mirar y coronado por dos cuernos capaces de ensartarnos bonitamente de lado a lado. Pero precisamente ese valor, esa serenidad privativa del toreo, es lo que le sitúa en un plano superior al ele cualquier otro deportista por muy profesional que sea. Porque hoy dfa tampoco se puede aducir para destruir la teoría de que los toros son un deporte má.s, el hecho de la prof esionalida.d, pues existen infinidad de d13portieli eas·i totalmente :µrof e13ionules. Volviendo pues a nuestro primitivo tema, el valor torero no es exclusivo en Espaila de los lidiadores profesionales. Un gran porcentaje de españoles llevan en sí la afición a los toros, nó como espectador, sino como actcr directo; si bien su propia conciencia de falta de habilidad con la capa o muleta, no le permite explayar su afición con JE .. toros de edad, y se limita a las becerradas organizadas en privad0, o en las fiestas locales de los pueblos. Claro es que no tod.o el que se siente capaz de torear a una res con mas o menos edad, y por tanto con más o menos kngitud de cuernos, tiene en su vida ocasiones propicias de hacerlo, pues en la práctica de este deporte influye enormemente el medio en que se desarrolla el aficionado; sobre todo en su primera juventud. Por-ello precisamente no son pocas las vocaciones frustadas que se encuentran en España y que derivan precisamente en la creación o formación de ese típico espectador "aficionado" verdad, pleno de pasión torera que puebla los tendidos de los cosos taurinos; y esa afición frustrada por falta de meaios es la fuente de esa fuerza pas:onal que mueve al público de los toros; fuerza que algún extrajero, enemigo de la fiesta, ha calificado de "barbarie'', precisamente por desconocer su fundamento y su principio. Pero el "valor torero" tiene adec tra fase, ya únicamente en posesión del torero profesional y es b que en España se llama "Vergüenza torera", y que puede calificarse [ 28] R ·A Empiamente de "honor prof esicnal". Esta categoría de valor es la que fuerza a cada lidiador, no a luchar con la mayor ventaja posible contra su enemigo, sino a desprenderse de toda aquella ventaja superflua, tascando el miedo· al mayor peligro y derrochando en su contrapartida el valor necesario para cubir el vacío que ese miedo ha dejado en el corazón del diestro, dando asi más espectacularidad a la lucha, con un beneficio cÍe la parte artística de la fiesta, al lucir el dcminio de la inteligencia sobre la fuerza bruta, resaltando la línea escultórica, que el torero cuida, como antítesis armónica de la belleza creada en medio del peligro y haciendo destacar sobre la claridad uniforme de la arena la policromía airosa y llena de emotividad y fuerza expresiva del conjunto, único en el mundo, que forma el lidiador y la res. Y por ese esfuerzo personal del lidiador, nace 11) que en el argot torero se denomina genéricamente "faena". Surge pues la faena gloriosa, que arrastra tras ella la emotividad y el entusiasmo del pueblo; que anula las simpatías y antipatías reduciéndolas al denominador común del clamor emotivo en el que cada buen aficionad~ aplaude y ovaciona en el diestro que ha conseguido el triunfo, los anhelos que cada uno lleva dentro Y todos sus sueños de triunfos in~ satisfechos... Esta es la razén de que nada escatime en esas tardes triunfales en que se ve salir por la puerta grande de la plaza la silueta de oro del torero, Bevado en hombres del entusiasmo cual ídolo capaz de reproducir y 'reflejar, en un momento, todo el espíritu unificado de los treinta mil espectadores. "Semana" cumple su oficio de llevar al público 1o mejor de nuestro ambiente "fil-hispánico". Su catolicidad es genuina ¡su vigor, joven! sus fuentes límpidas. Información política y social, literatura y arte, religión sirviendo de fondo maravillosamente eterno : eso es "Semana". Yo he venido de China. Los Superiores me enviaron a continuar mis estudios filosóficos y sociales en esta Perla del Oriente. Nunca me arrepentiré de ello. Filipinas ha marcado un surco en el campo de mis días ... surco imborrable, indefectible. Siempre me ha gustado escribir: Vengo escribiendo desde hace meses en la Revista Misional de México. Es un deber de nosotros los misioneros. Cuando estuve en China palpé muchas realidades; toqué va~ rias costas del país y ese contacto dejó preciosísima experiencia en mí. Ahora quiero escribir acerca de mi pobre misión, que parece sumergirse para siempre en la olas rojas del comunismo. Quiero llamar la atención católica hacia un punto urgido de la cristiandad. Desearía escribir sobre este tema-y sobre otros temas misioneros-en "Semana", a ser posible. No estoy solo. Ccnmigo están otros cuatro mis:?neros que se interesarían por lo mismo. Se podría mantener una página misionera - especialmente sobre Filipinas y China-en SEMANA. · Con esta proposición no quisiera, en lo más mínimo, violentar el fin de la revista. Si no fuera conveniete por el fin de "Semana", pu[ 29] blicar tal pagma misionera, dígamelo con plena confianza, como a un amigo de toda la vida. Comprendo que pueden haber razones en contra. Y lo primero que debe poser un misionero es comprensión. De la calidad de los artículos calidad literaria y genuina información la garantia creo es completa. Aquí le envío un artículo-el último que escribí. De ese gé..nero serían los demás. Es decir, no serán meditaciones piadosas que tal vez muchos no pudieran digerir, ni serán tampoco meramente informaciones políticas, históricas o sociales. Procurarán ser una armoniosa mezcla de ambas, expresada en estilo moderno, que querría siempre saber a suculento castellano. Tendrán su· parte fundamental histórico-filosófica, entretejida con cierta belleza literaria, indispendable para que logren interesar, aun a los que no buscan más que la literatura. Los cuatro querernos escribir siempre con pluma sólida y expresarnos con "labios de belleza". No quiero hacer panegíricos antes de empezar. La buena mercancía debe recomendarse sola. Pero juzgo necesario ponerlo al corriente de nuestro estilo, para evitarle posteriores dudas al respecto. Perrnítarne que insista. Hábleme con toda libertad y confianza. Por ningún motivo quisiera f ormr las cosas, ni sacarlas de su lugar natural Y propio.
